Actors Marlon Wayans and Jurnee “Getting Sexier With Age” Smollett visited Hampton (The Dungeon) University last Friday in effort to encourage students to vote and emphasize its importance.

Wayans, who did not vote in the last two presidential elections (both of which were won by George W. Bush) and thus admitted “Bush is my fault, the economy is my fault.” In effort to right the ship and make it up to the American people, Wayans is touring colleges throughout the battleground state of Virginia to share his story and in an admittedly biased way campaign for Barack Obama into the White House.

However Wayans wanted to make sure students weren’t only voting based on racial lines but instead on the issues.

“Barack comes from people like us, and always has our best interest at heart,” he said. “Make sure we get that brother in office. Our economy is hurting … this is not a black and white issue - this is a red, white and blue issue…As Americans, we’ve got to take back this country,” he said. “I wasn’t around during the civil rights movement. This is my civil right, and this is our turn, and this is something we can tell our kids about - a black president.”

Alongside Wayans, Smollett played the part of the emcee at a hip hop concert and the packed crowd pumped up leading them in a chant of “take the state.” The Great Debater also reminded students of Obama’s plan to grant every college student a $4,000 tax credit, and raise the minimum wage to $9.50 by 2011, two policies of particular import to the collegiate demographic. Ultimately the duo’s goal was to make sure all students are registered to vote prior to Virginia’s Oct. 6 voter registration deadline.

The rally at the other HU ended a state tour that included stops at Virginia State University, Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia. To capitalize on the excitement surrounding the perennial rivalry Hampton/ Howard Football game the two schools are said to host a friendly competition to see which registers the highest number of voters before the weekend.
