Movie Review: The Family that Preys

Posted by E. A. Smith

Not a huge fan of Madea or Tyler Perry’s work, but Sanaa Lathan did her thing.

Tyler Perry (The Billion Dollar Man)

I normally cannot stomach Tyler Perry’s work on or off screen.  What he cooks up, with him dressing like an old lady on screen or loud annoying clichés off screen, he just doesn’t fulfill what I am looking for.  His appetizer this year was Meet the Browns, a dry tasteless treat that almost made me wish I wasn’t black.  Although left unsatisfied, I decided to go back for the main course, The Family that Preys.  To my surprise I enjoyed every bite to the very end.  For dessert, he served the Madea Goes to Jail trailer, which I almost threw up looking at a man in drag trying to be funny.

The Family that Preys has a great cast consisting of Alfre Woodard, Sanaa Lathan, Taraji Henson, Robin Givens and Kathy Bates.  Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard make a great team playing great friends, one rich, white and full of life, the other struggling, black and living for others.  Sanaa plays the perfect b**** (I’ll leave it there so I will not give to much away) and of couse Tyler Perry plays the perfect husband on the right side of things.  The story is about life and what one does to gain what they want out of life I think, or is it about living life to the fullest no matter what it takes?  As most Tyler Perry movies do, it has many points.  This time he does a great job of pulling it all together in a nice package full of comedy, drama, tragedy and that typical ‘oooo dang’ moment that has the theatre clapping and laughing well into the next scene.  I normally would tell you all to wait till Tyler Perry’s films come on TBS (because he pretty much owns that network now) but I actually will go see this one again.  If you want to get a good one in before he ruins his name again with Madea Goes to Jail (set for spring 2009), go see The Family that Prey, you will be one satisfied customer.

“Almost made me wish I wasn’t black”

OUCH!!!!! I felt that FOR Tyler. But I can’t blame you for feeling that way.

What can we do, though?

i thought i was the only one that felt like that about his movies. I am proud of the man, for his accomplishments, but I think that some of his work makes black people look stupid. I havent seen this movie and probaly wont see it. I have a school boy crush on Sanaa Lathan but i dont want to see this movie.

I dont get it, just curiouse. Why are use so against him dressing as a woman when its the message of the play/movie that matters the most? Plus hes acting, in character and in costume. You know? And personaly i dont think any of the characters/movies/plays make black people look stupid. Im not black and the thought never crossed my mind…

he doesn’t have to act in that manner just about every time though to get a point across

“I’m not black and the thought never crossed my mind..”

That is EXACTLY WHY the thought never crossed your mind. Let me explain something to you, my friend.

There’s a saying in the church that “Favor ain’t Fair”. But secular folks would look at it as lucky people are rarely deserving people. So, a lot of times in life, the people who “take shortcuts” tend to get where they want faster.

I feel like Tyler has taken a shortcut by taking the low road. On the low road, there’s no resistance and very little rejection. But the high road has some altitude problems- the air gets thin up there.

He has chosen to pursue the black-face, minstrel route to success. Oh yeah, and throws in a couple of morals to cover up his non sense for good measure. But what about having a REAL black woman show that same passion on camera?

I’m sorry. What do I know? I’m just a hater, right? Maybe to those who don’t know what love is, I guess.
