Often considered a Highbrid Nation target, actress Jessica Alba has teamed up with Declare Yourself for a brand new Ad/ PSA for their “Only You Can Silence Yourself” campaign.  Declare Yourself is a nonprofit organization that encourages young people to vote and the campaign uses dramatic and powerful imagery to hit home the importance of voting.  The PSA’s creative typically show celebrities crying with their mouths forced shut. In 2004, Declare Yourself made headlines with the Christina Aguilera PSA which showed the singer with her lips tied up with leather string and actor Jonathan Bennett silenced with screws and bolts.

“I think it is important for young people to be aware of the need we have in this country to get them more active politically,” The suddenly politically conscious Alba said.” People respond to things that are shocking. If you don’t register and vote and make a difference, and hopefully change the bad things that are happening in our country, you are essentially just binding and muzzling yourself.”

Unlike with most things that come out of this MEXICAN-AMERICAN’s mouth, this message is clear; “Only you can silence yourself. Make them hear you. Register to vote now.”  Admittedly I’ve had an ax to grind with regard to Alba for years centering around her stupid public denial of her hispanic heritage.  Its even more concerning to me that if she’s able to get involved in a politically conscious campaign such as this, it would lead one to believe that her mindless comments concerning her heritage could not simply be written off as those delivered by just  another dumb blond.

However given the nature of the campaign and its importance I will for once support Alba’s efforts.
