Former Democrat VP Candidate, Joe “Turncoat” Lieberman Supports McCain at RNC

Posted by Juan

A few thoughts

Joe Lieberman

I’m not sure if any of the Nation cared to peek at the Republican National Convention but our old boy Joe Lieberman was on stage endorsing John McCain.

This may surprise some of you but I don’t think that McCain is a bad guy or a bad republican for that matter. I’m a registered Democrat yes but I’m not strictly loyal to party lines.  If I feel a particular candidate will represent our country, my state, my city I’ll check their name regardless of their party affiliation.

That said its one thing to not HATE a republican and another thing to endorse a Republican at their national convention as Joe Lieberman did earlier this evening.  I don’t get it.  Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that he was beat in his Connecticut re-election campaign and had to run on the Independent ticket to win back his seat. I don’t remember the particulars but want that HIS fault that his campaign fell apart?  Granted he’s John McCains old Senator buddy but its one thing to be cool with the guy and go way back but another to tell democrats and your loyal constiuency to vote for him when u caucus with dems. Perhaps I’m hating and a little hypocritical but isn’t that what politics are all about? Bad form Smee! Bad form!

Being a political junkie, I watched a good chunk of the convention. Fred Thompson gave a good speech. I’d be interested in finding out who wrote it.

Some background on Lieberman:

During the senate election of 2006, Joe was in the hot box because he was supporting the President on the Iraq war. He got himself in trouble with the democrats because he was quoted as saying that the democrats were obstructing the prosecution of the war.

In retaliation, the democratic leadership decided to dump him; so they openly sided (and funded) his primary opponent Ned Lamont. In the primary Lamont beat Lieberman 52-48.

Lieberman decided not to go down without a fight and ran as an independent. He won the general election 50-40. The republican nominee, Alan Schlesinger only scored 10% and most republicans sided with Lieberman.

Personally, I hold no grudge against Lieberman for doing this. You’re a sitting senator and your own party tries to shank you. I’d be pissed too.

Then again, I’m not big on party loyalty. I don’t think that voting for one party means that you are in a blood-oath to support that party forever.

Thanks for the clarification. I knew there was something like that going on.

I hear what you’re saying but it sounds like sour grapes if you ask me. I commend him for sticking to his guns about the war no matter how wrong he was but he throws any stock he might have gained with me by deciding to side with the GOP because he got dissed.
