Fat Joe Calls Daddy Yankee A Sellout For Endorsing John McCain
Fat Joe has harsh words for Daddy Yankee. Is he out of line?
Here on Highbrid Nation we try to juggle not only reporting on all the big stories in hip hop but we try to include the bigger stories, such as politics, also. It’s rare that those world collide but with so much on the line in these upcoming elections everyone in hip hop has an opinion on what they feel needs to happen. Overwhelmingly most major figures in the hip hop world are firmly supporting Barack Obama. However there are a few exceptions. One of the bigger ones is Daddy Yankee who surprised everyone when he came out and endorsed John McCain at a recent event at a high school is was campaigning at.
Of course it seems odd that Daddy Yankee would endorse John McCain. It’s even more odd that McCain would welcome such a endorsement with all the trouble Ludacris has caused Obama. When explaining why he endorsed McCain he says he he likes how McCain has been there for Latinos and what he has done on the immigration issue which of course proves that Daddy Yankee is an idiot since McCain has totally flipped on how he feels immigration should be handled. Anyway, aren’t too willing to let Daddy Yankee slide. Fat Joe has recently talked to MTV and had this to say about Daddy Yankee…
“Just like that! I gotta go in. I’m talking to little cousins that like [Yankee] and all that, and they’re starting to believe that John McCain is [the best candidate]. I can’t have that.
“I opened the newspaper and got sick to my stomach. I felt like I wanted to vomit when I seen that. The reason why I called him a sellout is because I feel he did that for a [publicity] look, rather than the issues that are affecting his people that look up to him. How could you want John McCain in office when George Bush and the Republicans already have half a million people losing their homes in foreclosure? We’re fighting an unjust war. It’s the Latinos and black kids up in the frontlines, fighting that war. … We over here trying to take the troops out of Iraq and bring peace. This guy immediately wants war. If not with Iraq or Afghanistan, he’ll start a new one with Iran. I feel real disgusted that Daddy Yankee would do that. Either he did that for a look, or he’s just not educated on politics.”
Interesting words. I’m kinda surprised. Not only by Fat Joe’s knowledge on the issues but because I wouldn’t have even had thought he could read at all. He kinda just looks illiterate, ya know?
So what does this mean? Are we gonna see artists beefing over politics? If so, I’m taking Fat Joe’s side. Not because I’m anti-McCain. Because reggaeton sucks.

you got me laughing hard as hell. It just seems to me that Daddy Yankee really des need t educate himself more about McCain.
I agree w/ Fat Joe. Daddy Yankee believe it or not has a strong hispanic following, probably more than Fat Joe, & for him to endorse McCain is a slab in the face to minorities…seriously
-B.
But does Daddy Yankee owe his vote to his fans or to himself. If he wants to endorse McCain for whatever idiotic reason he has, should anyone harass him for that?
I think so, w/ millions of lives @ stake and a government that is known for the pull & switch, no pun intended, when it comes to the election, we need every vote we can get…4 years ago I was certain that Kerry was going to win, he was clearly a better candidate than Bush, crushed him on the debates…my first time voting, & it was for nothing….My feeling are even stronger for Obama, but he has one thing goin against him…he’s a minority. Daddy Yankee is in the position to influence minorities, don’t misguide the public, ppl are struggling as is on whether to accept a black face in Washington….but all in all your right to each is own if he feels strongly about McCain, that didn’t even feel right typing lol, then so be it….

Mike go suk sum cock u fukn faggot, Reggaeton Rules!!!
damn, all that pimpin?
-B.
Let dude do what he fells is the best thing for him. I’m tried of people passing judement on others just because they may not fall on the same side of an argument. We can disargee all day long but end it in name calling. If anyhing I respect Yankee more for takin a position that he knows will be looked down at by others. Big ups Yankee, F*ck everyone else and they opinion!!!!
All that hostility?!?!?….do u know him personally? Well calm down….people disagree deal w/ it. U know I’m “tried” I mean tired too of people coming onto a blog where people are suppose to post their opinion pissed b/c their opinion doesn’t coincide w/ yours…grow up, everyone is not going to “fell”, lol, I mean feel the same way u do. u don’t see anyone on here sayin “F” this or “F” that b/c they disagree, it’s called respect lil guy
-B.
Thats my point right there!!! I agree with exactly what your sayin TheBolB. But way the name callin? Being called “A Sellout” is serious in these streets. (I see you caught the errors in my above statement, thanks!!!)
He’s a sellout plain and simple. If he supports McCain, that good for him but he should not have endorsed him. Artist n Athletes are not regular people b/c they can say anything (without research) and people look up to him and follow his words unlike us regular people. Since he made his opinion public, then he should get critized in public. SELLOUT!!!!
So what I’m taking from this is that we all agree that a guy like Daddy Yankee can sway potential voters. But I’m not sure that’s good. Do we want people voting for anyone just because some reggaeton artist told them to or do we want people to take some time and research some issues for themselves and make a choice based on their personal beliefs?
Mike, I think it’s foolish to expect one Latin Rapper not to comment on another Latin Rapper’s public endorsement of a candidate for President of the country they are both citizens of. Fat Joe has every right to be disgusted and disappointed with Daddy Yankee’s endorsement of McCain, and as a Latino with a similar if not larger spotlight it is his duty to express this disgust.
This may be the first time Daddy Yankee, who until recently has been a resident of Puerto Rico, will ever vote in a Presidential election. For him to publicly endorse John McCain for MONEY- because, oh, this is obviously about money- is ridiculous, offensive to our culture, and irresponsible. The fact that you are a “journalist” and don’t “see” this speaks volumes of your disconnect with the Latino culture.
Well Daddy Yankee has been vague about his exact reasons for endorsing McCain so I don’t think that it’s fair to say that it’s money. At least not in the way you may be thinking of money. Daddy Yankee is someone who has worked himself up from Puerto Rico to become a rich and famous recording artists. Maybe he just feels he earned his money and wants to keep more of it. Honestly I don’t completely blame rich people for wanting a Republican in office. Having a republican would mean less taxes on the rich. Maybe Daddy Yankee is just looking out for himself.
Fat Joe on the other hand blames Republicans for the lose of his sister who he feels died because of poor healthcare. Thus he wants a Democrat in office.
In the end people look out for their own interests more often than not.
Mike,
You need to do your research. Daddy Yankee released a statement saying he “reviewed proposals from both candidates”. He says in the statement that “McCain’s proposal was more appealing”. If that doesn’t insinuate money, then what does? Why would he “consider proposals” if his decision was political? Daddy Yankee has NEVER backed a candidate in the past, even in Puerto Rico where he has been super famous since 1992.
Your suggestion that he endorsed McCain because he is rich is ridiculous, and not grounded in anything Daddy Yankee has claimed. The fact is more “rich” people- or “wealthy, educated Americans” as they are labeled by the campaigns- are supporting Obama. Obama’s policies, though he will raise taxes on those making over 250K annually, actually favor the wealthy because they favor the economy, period. Daddy Yankee doesn’t care about this, he cares about the check he received for the public appearance. Do you really think an artist that charges 100K-250K per appearance would just show up in New Mexico to endorse McCain without being paid for it? Daddy Yankee hasn’t voted for a President not ONCE in his life, and he is currently a resident of Puerto Rico (unless he will register with his Florida address), and will not vote in this election either.
If people looked out for their own interests they would want a Democrat in office… at least THIS time. Your post is not only one sided, it’s hypocritical. Daddy Yankee can make public comments and endorsements based on what you see as his personal politics, yet Fat Joe can’t??? What’s that about?
Nigga u need to shut da fuck up go to P.R n say reggaeton sucks I bet u would shit yaself
Why’s everybody arguing so much against McCain. The way I see it, he may (emphasis on the may) have good plans for the country. Obama is great, I have been actively participating with the Barack Obama campaign and will be signing up people to vote this Saturday. I can’t vote, but would vote for Obama. BUT, in all my activities I just see people voting for Obama because he’s half-black, not because of his political standpoint (which I support) but just because of that. Politicians will never know what it’s like to be part of the lower class because they’re all rich. Latinos, being largely Catholic, come from a very CONSERVATIVE culture, and thus justifying DY’s choice. In the video he’s arrogant (that’s because he’s rich), but that’s not the point. DY is endorsing a candidate that fully supports his way of living, That’s how you’re supposed to vote. Go ahead and arbitrate me but if you vote for Obama just because he’s [half] black then that makes you a racist. NUFF SAID
&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Noone ever said that they were voting for Obama for that reason so…………………….. NUFF SAID!
Elis,
I think you are also very disconnected with the Latin American community, or just completely misinformed (even though it sounds as if you may just be Latino). The reason many Latinos are “Catholic” is because in many Latin American countries it is the only way to acquire a birth certificate, not because of a “conservative” culture. That’s just nonsense.
As for people voting for Obama because he’s half black, you must hang around a very ignorant crowd. I have met more white people who staunchly support Obama, than blacks, and it is not because of his color. You obviously have very little experience with politics if “you can’t vote”, and don’t know that McCain’s policies would actually hurt America (just look at the past 8 years).
You are further misinformed in thinking that most congressmen and women don’t know what it’s like to be poor. This is America- many people who are now rich were poor at one point, especially Obama and Biden (Biden still IS poor for DC standards).
Just stick to what you know…
I like Reggaeton and I’m a fan of Daddy Yankee. But I agree with Fat Joe. Any Puerto Rican, like myself, who grew up in the hood and lived through the horrid 12 years of Reggaenomics, the prosperous 8 years of Clinton and then to see it undone by the last 8 years under Pres. Bush, yet will still endorse a Republican is an idiot.
Maybe Daddy Yankee heard about Sen. Obama’s tax hikes for the top 5% and it got him shitting in his boots. He’s probably too stupid to realize that citizens living in the commonwealth of Puerto Rico don’t pay Federal Taxes. They do however pay into social security which if Sen. McCain had his way a good portion would have been privatized and at risk of being completely wiped out because of the state of the economy.
Anyway, most people who are old enough to vote are old enough to make up their minds as to who they will vote for. If they’re stupid enough to vote for a candidate because of a single endorsement by a celebrity then they deserve what they get. Although, I hope for our sake that Sen. Obama becomes the 44th President of our United States.
