Obama Waits Until The Very Last Minute And Picks Joe Biden

Posted by Mike "Evorgleb" Belgrove

Let’s take a look at what this running mate choice means.

I reported a couple a weeks ago about how the Obama campaign was gonna make sure that supporters were gonna be the first people who knew who Obama had picked as a running mate via text message. At 3:11 am on Saturday I did indeed did get a text message from the Obama campaign saying that Barack had picked Joe Biden to be his running mate. I was not excited or surprised. I was just kinda annoyed that I was awaken to be told something I had already heard a couple hours earlier on CNN. Yet upon thinking about it I was intrigued by what was going on.

So let’s look at the two stories that are going on here. The obvious story is that Obama has a running mate now and it is not Hillary Clinton. The less obvious story is how the Obama campaign has been playing the media like a fiddle by teasing them as to when the running mate was going to be announced and thus leaving John McCain standing around for almost a week saying “hey. what about me?”. Starting last Monday the media did nothing but talk about Obama as they waited to find out who the running mate was. Then after all that waiting CNN’s John King was thrown a bone right before the text message went out to everyone else telling them the pick was Joe Biden.

Let’s Talk about this choice of Joe Biden as running mate. There seem to be two schools of thought when it comes to Obama supporters opinons on what it takes to gain victory. “Obama needs Hillary to win the election” and “F*ck Hillary”. I personally fall into the second school of thought. I’m kinda tired of Clinton supporters acting like the Clintons are some type of political gods that must be appeased for anything to happen in the Democratic Party. And from the looks of it Obama himself seems to subscribe to the second school of thought also.

Do I think picking Hillary would have helped Obama? Probably but he would have certainly been overshadowed by Hillary’s personality and Obama must appear to be the one running the show. Hillary on the ticket would have made Obama look weak and it would have seemed like he was bullied into taking her as a running mate which is exactly what certain people were trying to do to him.

Instead he picked Joe Biden. If you asked me, this was the best possibly choice he could have made. Biden is a super powerful senator from Delaware who has all types of foreign policy experience which Obama lacks. Biden who has strong support amongst blue collar whites, grew up in my home state of Pennsylvania which is a very important swing state and a must win for Obama. Biden is also one of the most gangsta politicians in Washington, known for his aggressive style of speaking and getting things done.

Unfortunately there are some dumb @$$ Clinton supporters that are so bitter over Clinton not getting the nomination and then not getting the VP nod that they are vowing to vote for John McCain. Because that makes a lot of sense right? You’re pissy your candidate lost so you vote for a candidate that has a polar opposite platform than the person you supported instead of going with the person who would be essentially the second best thing, Obama. I used to say over zealous black people were gonna cost Barack the election but it might just be dumb @$$ Hillary supporters.

Nation, I’ll let you weigh in though. With recent polls taken after the choice of Biden showing that Obama and McCain are exactly tied with voter support with almost 1/3 of all former Clinton supporters saying they are gonna vote for McCain, was Biden really the right choice?

His biggest challenge now will be woman voters and the working class clearly. Great post…very well written. I think Clinton would have been a bad choice given the Democrats would not be able to take advantage of getting a boost in her home state. New York is not a battleground state so in that sense its a waste. I think Hillary might have gone a long way to making him a better candidate however Biden (and this is important) will make Obama a better administration.
Its kind of like marriage. Often times people only think of the wedding (the election) when the real challenge is the marriage (presidency.)

    • I will edit my post to reflect this so there is no confusion, Biden grew up in PA but represents Deleware (a solid blue state) in the senate.
He grew up in Scanton, the same city Hillary somehow convinced voters the was from (her grandfather lived there and she occationally visited him)

So people may try to make the arguement that Hillary could have delievered PA also, but I honestly dont think so.

I agree with you Juan in that Biden complements Obama very well.

The e-mail at 3AM was to let you know that Obama was going to be on top of his game at all hours to refute the old Hillary attack.

    The man is genius!!!

Obama will be criticized heavily if Biden does not help deliver the victory. Bottom line is there always would have been the situation where you can’t please everyone. Biden will be the attack dog, we just have to pray that his lips do not get too loose. (He did keep his selection to himself, however. We have progress already.)

Obama is definitely a genius utilizing waves of the future leaving the competition behind. I just hope the US realizes what we are witnessing and WE ALL VOTE and create a much needed change together.

I feel Obama made the best choice and commend him for not letting the media make his decision. Think about it folks, god willing nothing happens to Obama, but in the event something did, I would be fine with Joe filling the spot, real talk. He intelligent, a vet in the game and personally I feel he really cares about our country and average working folk. I think the ticket is a win/win for all of us. we coming to the finish line in this race, so I only have one word to say….VOTE!!!
