The Source Magazine’s New Publisher Looks To Restore Glory Days With 20 Anniv. Relaunch
Magazine to relaunch next week with diversified and “multigenerational” approach
Don’t call it a comeback. Following a year that saw The Source magazine file for bankruptcy, The publication is poised to celebrate its 20th anniversary with the relaunch of the once undisputed champ of hip hop publications. Next week, The Source will relaunch boasting a brand new look and focus that its co-publisher says will restore the magazine to its former status as hip hop industry bible.
Earlier this year, Media and entertainment lawyer, L. Londell McMillan bought The Source along with his partner and recognized investment banker, Jeffery Scott.
“It’s a very seminal period, an opportunity to both celebrate 20 years of content and the fact that The Source was a leader in chronicling the culture of hip-hop,” McMillan told the Associate Press. “I’m on a mission to restore it to the community that gave birth to it and open the door to those that currently enjoy and influence that hip-hop culture. It’s exciting because we believe that we can do it.”
As hip hop matures into a culture that spans several generations, McMillan said the magazine will be sensitive to its older and new/ younger audience displaying a “multigenerational” focus.
“I think that what we’re trying to do is evolve it as hip-hop has evolved and become an international force, to evolve it without losing its core essence that was the centerpiece of its earliest beginnings and greatness. But it has to evolve, just like hip-hop has to evolve,” McMillan said.
In addition to the heavy concentration on music of course, the rag will also include regular sections on lifestyle, travel, education, business and other topics. “We’re just going to expand on what The Source has always done well,” said McMillan, adding that music will be “a core focus but not 80 percent of the book.”
The 20th anniversary issue will feature four separate covers of hip-hop pioneers LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Queen Latifah and Nas all photographed by Spike Lee.
