Master P Builds a ‘Better Black Television’ Network. Will His latest Venture Flop?
Is the cable network focused on positive content for black people just a copycat or pioneer. History is not on your side Percy.
Hip-hop entrepreneur Percy Miller (Master P) is launching a family-friendly black cable network not coincidentally like BET. The network which will be called the Better Black Television network is an obvious jab at the Bob Johnson created juggernaut and is said to feature “positive content for a black and brown culture,” according to statement.
BBTV, which is slated to launch in 2009, will be a general entertainment channel running a wide range of scripted, unscripted and news programming, including drama and comedy series, movies, animation, reality, politics, sports and entertainment news, children’s educational and teen programming, as well as “responsible hip hop music and videos.” Oh brother…
Miller has also recruited a couple of high profile celebs for his advisory board including Denzel Washington, current NBA player (and ironically Charlotte Bobcat) Derek Anderson, DJ Kool Herc and entrepreneur Olatokunbo Betiku, Vault Load Films president Jim Finkl, NAACP executive director Vicangelo Bullock, real estate mogul Curtis Oakes and perhaps most importantly, cable industry veteran, Prof. Sal Martino.
BBTV chairman and CEO Miller said he’s had the vision for BBTV for several years. “I believe that there is a market in our community for a new diverse network that provides a new brand of superior programming that caters to all aspects of television, from reality to original programming,” he said.
Addressing how this will affect he and his son’s music exposure on other entertainment networks, Miller responded that he has “a great relationship with BET and MTV” and he and Lil’ Romeo, “will continue to do work with them and support their networks.”
Ok…I could probably write a book on this but I’ll keep it simple. I like Master P. He’s always had two thing going for him ambition and posititivity. I however can’t call him an entreprenuer. His ideas are never original. In fact they’re rarely if ever an improvement on an existing product or service just built to compete and that’s why its tough for him to ever differentiate. Remember that cell phone carrier he bought and bragged would one day surplant the likes of Verizon?? How’d that ever work out?
Now obviously he’s been more successful and the capital game than I so who am I to judge but with his influence I think he could really use some truely creative minds on his team. He doesn’t have to be the face of the franchise. In fact in many instances it hurts his credibility because he’s seen in our communities as “corny” regardless of his intent. That’s why I’ve emphasized his advisory team. I think that’s important because in addition to the star value he’s got some people who actually know what they’re doing. He just could use a few more.
Do I think this will be succesful? mildly. Don’t think the new BET cause it won’t be but hopefully he can make BET and other networks more mindful and force their hand to produce and broadcast more social responsible programming. Thoughts?

i say its a good idea and imma get on it
I also Like P. The dude goes out and makes money and I respect that. People have been calling for a “more positive” black network for years and 1TV ( think thats what its called) tried to fill the void to little sucess. And its hard to beleive that when it comes down to getting those ratings BBTV wont fall into the same practices as BET. Another thing 1TV already isn’t carried by most providers because they feel 1 black network (BET) is enough. Is there really room for three?
its tv one and they have no marketing sense either. their ads are in midtown on bus kings
It’s a good idea I think personally, don’t complain if you are not going to make (or try to make) a difference. My only complaint is why call it that? You come off as a challenge instead of just doing what you think is right. Already from jump you will be judged and may fail because of it. The big thing is original content (other than reality shows), if the network can produce original content in the comedy and drama realm, I’ll be on board. TV One and BET both fail at doing that, that’s what’s needed a place for new and upcoming actors, directors, writers and producers to have a home to do thier thing.

Good point…using the word “Better” implies that there is a worse. I think its an obvious jab to BET before you even get past the title. Bad job.
Damn if the name is a jab at BET!!!!
The fact is that BET needs to get better then the crap thats on there now. I don’t even let my kids watch BET because of the negative light it shines on our people.
Just about all the music videos demean our women and depict the brothers as thugs. I’m sorry but I grew up in the hood and it ain’t nothing to glamerize. It’s bad enough its laced in all the popular “hip-hop” music and no one making the music fells like they need to be a positive roll model. MF’s like to say,”the streets is watchin”. Naw fool our kids are watrchin and thats one of the main reasons why the problems in our neighborhoods keep repeating is self. It’s time our kids seen a better example of black people in America and maybe P can help start a trend.
Yes great point but at what point can you, as a business, sacrifice the ratings for responsibility. Remember everyone is entitled to make money. Not saying its right but as you’ve pointed out its our responsibility as parents to monitor their content…television or otherwise.
I don’t know how this new venture will do but I think it is a good thing. I’m tired of seeing BET turn into the new MTV. It will also be great to see a channel that is not owned by VIACOM.
I doubt it will do that well, but I wish P the best!
I’m with it, but yeah, the name needs to be changed.
i would luv to see a new black network, because the BET network is terrible.TV1 is another terrible network for us as blacks and browns all they show is reruns of shit that we have all saw years ago the only thing that has me watching is the micheal baisdan show and thats it.please tv1 take off that show called get the hook-up it has no class and they show to many dam reruns.
