Despite Kanye West’s Vow to Boycott MTV, He’s Teamed with Network For War Vets Documentary
Flip Flop Alert!!!
Kanye West and MTV’s resident soul brother, Sway Calloway have teamed up with MTV to create a unique style documentary titled “Choose Or Loose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming.” According to Billboard.biz the film is part of an overall campaign to chronicle the individual storires of our young men and women in the armed forces, the difficulties and side effects they face when they return home as veterans.
Now although Kanye has significantly fallen out of favor with me personally I do find his efforts quite intruiging if not commendable. For the most part Kanye’s political prowess didn’t extend beyond the boundries of his public MTV “Bush hates black people” rant or his occasional temper tantrum over a failed Grammy campaign. Kanye’s most important cause has always been…Kanye. And wasn’t it Mr. West who also accused MTV playing favorites when he wasn’t adorned with a moonman at the 2007 MTV Video Awards vowing to permanantly boycott the network? Now he’s not only getting political but he’s in bed with his arch enemy…it didn’t take long for Nas to have some company with his Flip Flop award.
None the less the show’s intent and message is still important. The one-hour special is said to pay surprise visits to recent Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans. In almost Oprah like fashion, the odd couple is said to shower each vet with life altering and tear jerking gifts like paying their debts, rent or tuition all on behalf of MTV and the Dr. Donda West Foundation.
“I know my music inspires and helps a lot of people, but you can always do more,” West said via a statement. “I teamed up with MTV and took the opportunity to share the spotlight with these veterans and hear their stories. I went to their homes to listen and get their firsthand experiences. I wanted to hear their stories.”
