Why Ciara’s New Deals with Wihelmina Modeling Agency And Steve & Barry’s Aren’t Well Thought Out
Can’t knock the hustle just the execution
In true hip hop form…R&B singer Ciara will begin diverting some of her concentration away from her music to focus on her blossoming modeling career after recently signing with the agency, Wilhelmina. Ciara, who of course has been featured in a series of Rocawear ads apparently is looking to further leverage her C- list fame to cultivate a more serious modeling career. With Wilhelmina boasting placements with campaigns Versace, Donna Karen Hugo Boss, Prada, Bannana Republic, Loreal and Clinique this will clearly be shift for Ciara to market a more high end product than Rocawear (no offense.) She won’t be alone however as Wilhelmina is also the home of singers Brandy, Nick Lashey, Ashley & Jessica Simpson and Ryan Cabrera.
“Modeling has always been one of my aspirations,” says Ciara. “But I was insecure about my height. I thought I was 5′7″ but I just found out that I’m 5′8″ so I’m really excited about that.” Uhhhhh ok…that’s a real ditzy comment. Perhaps you should also think about a publicity while you’re at it.  ÂÂ
In Ciara Business Matters, she is also in talks with discounters Steve & Barry’s, to develop and affordable line of gear that reflects her personal style following in the footsteps of other Steve & Barry’s collaborators, Sarah Jessica Parker and Stephon Marbury.ÂÂ
I wonder if she’ll be modeling her new line for Steve & Barry’s. See this is where the branding is important. These two announcements are in essence a contradiction in terms. In one breath you’re telling me you have the look to model high end product to an affluent audience but in the other breath you’re looking to launch a clothing line for low budget Old Navy knock off? I’m not knocking her hustle but perception is everything. If you’re going to make these two moves perhaps it would show that someone’s actually thought about them if you staggered the announcements. I’m not familiar with the acronym but I think I can figure it out. I take it you didn’t like my analysis. I like Ciara. Don’t get me wrong. I just wish she had staggered the announcements. Not a knock on C…just her people.
LOL… Perhaps she should hire you.
If Beyonce can model for Armani, Loreal and other high end products but hawk affordable Deroen clothes she merely reaches more markets as a single brand. Same principle applies to Ciara.
A very narrow minded analysis of these deals by whoever wrote the article.
Dereon is in NO WAY the same class as Steve and Barry’s Beyonce owns that brand. Even if the clothes are afordable they speak to higher fashion than Steve & Barry’s. That’s one step above Marshalls.
That’s a sexy women right there…you dont even have to fancy that shit up.
Juan, thanks for the buisness lesson:)
And how do you know Ciara won’t own her clothing brand Juan? Another assumption. Again, the same principle applies… there are a number of brands/celebrities that can be strategically marketed to a range of markets simply by differentiating the price. Jayz did a campaign with Heineken but as a ‘brand’ he also endorses an expensive champagne. These are not mutually exclusive marketing strategies.
Well she’s would be in partnership with Steve and Barry’s much like Stephon Marbury. On the other hand House of Dereon is a line owned and operated by the Knowles family. But that is here nor there.
I’m not saying she shouldn’t market products/ services that aren’t affordable. I just think some marketing tact by her publicity team/ marketing managers could have been exercised. She’s devaluing one project with the announcement of the other.
In your Jay-Z example we’re talking about what we call in the industry “category exclusivity.” Two totally different concepts. Ciara’s team is guilty here of image cannibalization or just plain confusion.
I like that you’re thinking though Bourbon. I’m open to other arguments on the subject.
Juan I think your comment in reference to her deals being a contradiction are presumptuous. Her modeling for Whilemina does not mean all her ad campaigns will be high end, and even if they are, her having a clothing line in Steve n Barry are 2 different entities.
I think it is a smart move in that she wants to cater to her population in sense of style. Why not make it affordable? Sara Jessica Parker is also in Steve n Barry. These stars and even designers are starting to learn that the average female with an average income are their biggest supporters so they are making things more affordable to keep that support rolling in. I say Ciara as a young woman and influential woman is positioning herself properly, she is possibly trying to cater to 2 markets. The more diverse the better.
FYI Steve n Barry’s sells good quality clothes. Just because a label is attached does not make it good quality or automatically look good.
I hear you Ruby, I’m not so much saying her partnerships are a contradiction…I love Ciara (well like her.) Its her Publicist I’m taking to task for announcing these two things on the same day. They’re a contradiction of terms.
What if 50 announced his partnership with a childrens charity on the same day he launches his new liquor sponsorship. Just bad taste.
