Don Cornelius Sells ‘Soul Train’ After 37 Years
New Owner vows to “preserve show’s legacy.” Does that mean its back?!
Back in April, I told you that that Don Cornelius had announced that he had canceled the Soul Train Awards leading to my speculating that this was the last stop on the franchise’s line. However Cornelius, creator of famed TV series for the past 37 years, has announced that he has sold the property to MadVision Entertainment, a multimedia company.
MadVision specializes in “branded urban content and production” which plans to “preserve the show’s legacy and expand the brand for the generations to come” according to Kenard Gibbs, MadVision co-founder.
Under the deal, Cornelius agrees to sell the rights to “Soul Train’s” weekly series, including more than 1,100 hours of archival footage. Although no specifics have been announced, MadVision has hinted that it may bring back the show with a fresh look. New episodes haven’t aired in 3 years. No terms of the deal have been announced.
“The ‘Soul Train’ legacy and brand are of the utmost importance to me and to ‘Soul Train’s’ millions of fans,” Cornelius told the Hollywood Reporter. “After years of offers, I feel the time is now finally right to pass the torch. The MadVision team understands and respects my vision.”

I want them to bring back the board with the letters scrambled. that was so stupid it was genius!
No the soul train line is genius. Even more popular with black people as the “Electric Slide.”
Can you really bring Soul Train back? The day of “We wish you love, peace and souuuuuuul” was was like no other. But wasn’t it a product of the day? It’s still an institution, but as a classic. I don’t want to see anybody mess with that.
Ain’t nobody smooth enough to pick up where Don Cornelius left off. None that I’ve seen.
Thank you, it took 3 long years, but we need Soul train, and the awards because it was the stomping ground for many black artists, and the Soul train awards needs to comeback bigger and better, give BET awards a run for it’s money! I can’t wait for the new season!
Sheila, I think you’re right the only problem is how do you preserve that history other than to keep it going. Its classic but in what context. Unless you’re building a museum it’s going to be hard for the generations that follow us to be able to understand what it was all about.
