I’m usually not the gossip type but every morning I peak at the New York Post Page Six column to see if there is anything of significant note.  Yesterday, amidst the hollywood hookups and celebrity spotting there was a feel good story about Mary J. Blige.

Apparently MJB was shopping at the very expensive, Diane von Furstenberg store in New York’s Meatpacking District where she overheard the pleas of woman who was at the counter upset about an item she couldn’t afford.  Apparently the girl had a dress on Layaway for $900 which she thought was only $500.  Here’s what an eye-whitness had to say:

That’s when Blige swooped in with her pocketbook and told the saleswoman: “Go get the girl. I want to pay for the balance on the dress,” the witness recounted.

The customer at first turned down Blige’s offer but eventually agreed after the singer said: “I know what it’s like to want something and not be able to have it. I insist.”

The woman wanted to send her a check for the balance, but Blige said, “Just enjoy it. I’m blessed, so let me do this.”

I’m kind of jellous…that never happens to me.  I must admit cause its not like the girl was buying a pair of of bobos that she needed to walk 10 miles to get to school in, this was an expensive Diane von Furstenberg dress.  A someone special in my life LOVES her clothes so I know the effect this particular desinger has on her fans.

On the other hand its another example of why Mary J. Blige is one of God’s true soldiers.  She’s been through the ringer in life and has been blessed with money and fame.  But think the “blessing” that she was referring to in the quote was more so the peace that she has had late in life.   “I know what it’s like to want something.”  We all do…Mary has finally found it and I’m really happy for her.  Salute!
