A few weeks ago I told you about how Spike Lee was beefing with Clint Eastwood over his depiction (or lack there of) of the black representation in his two recent Iwo Jima films. Well perhaps in response, an Italian American group is pulling Lee’s card for his stereotypical depiction of Italians in his flicks.

Bill Dal Cerro, president of the Italic Institute of America is calling Lee a hypocrit with his recent attacks on Eastwood citing, “Spike Lee is very talented,” Dal Cerro tells the Hollywood Reporter. “But I sometimes wish he’d practice what he preaches. His points about African-Americans are well taken, but, ironically, he does the same thing to Italians in his films.”

Honestly as much as I like and to some extent look up to Spike and what he’s done, The Italic Institute of America is completely right. Spike’s portrayal of Italians in “Do the Right Thing” was way over the top with the whole Sal’s pizza shop bit. HOWEVER, Spike does this intentionally. He exaggerates stereotypes on screen in order to help address them in society. Dal Cerro’s group is also concerned that Spike’s upcoming World War II drama “Miracle at St. Anna,” will also misrepresent Italians as it is set in Italy.
