MARKETING MATTERS: Has the Ever-Growing Socially Conscious World Turned Endorsement $ To the Radical?

Posted by Juan

Is it now P.C. to be political?

Steve NashMichael Jordan once famously said of his decision to avoid backing a Democratic senate candidate in his home state of North Carolina, “Republicans buy sneakers too.” Jordan understood what virtually every endorsement cash cow knows as the golden rule:  Thou shalt not discuss politics in public.

As Americans are becoming ever more socially aware, outspoken and environmentally conscious, corporate America has begun to take notice and may be throwing the old political caution to the wind.  In the sports world athletes such as Steve Nash had traditionally have been deprived of the upper echelon of endorsement dollars because of their activity in the socially conscious arena.

Environmental protection has always been very important to Nash and when Nike approached him about endorsing their “green” line of shoes he obliged. Now Nash proudly wears and endorses the Nike Trash Talk’s, a sneaker made from recycled rubber.

Forbes magazine discusses the ever changing social climate in the United States  and how it may mean more marketing dollars for athletes like Nash and others who, in the past were passed over.  Will global warming or the war in Iraq spell greater endorsements for the athletes with the gall to stand firm on one side of the issue?  A very interesting piece. In encourage you all to read it.
