With Mixed Emotions, Buffalo Bills Release Kevin Everett to Clear Way for Him To Receive Disability Benefits
Although no longer playing his story and inspiration can be felt with the team forever.
The Buffalo Bills made a move Tuesday officially ending the career of their former tight end Kevin Everett by releasing him. The move was made Everett can start receiving disability benefits for the spinal cord injury.
According to the Associated Press, Everett can now apply for long-term disability benefits and a one-time payment under the player health reimbursement plan which he would not have been eligible for had the Bills kept him on the active roster.
“We had numerous discussions with the league in dealing with this process to assist him in the best way possible,” a team spokesman said in a statement. “Kevin will always remain a Buffalo Bill in the same way that Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and so many others before him are held in the highest regard by our franchise.  The Buffalo Bills continue to be moved by Kevin Everett’s heartwarming story of his recovery,” the team said. “His progress from September 9 of last year through today is nothing short of a miracle, and is a tremendous example of faith, family and hard work.”
Everett of course was injured and temporarily paralyzed from the neck down making a tackle on Denver Broncos receiver, Domenik Hixon on a special teams play last year’s season opener. Although his prospects for a meaningful recovery were slim, Everett regained the including the ability to walk without assistance.

Good story. It’s bittersweet to realize your NFL career is over but at least he will be helped out financially. That’s much better than the majority of NFL players who play for a year or two, are cut, then have no job skills or complete education to make a lasting career. Ahem…Ickey Woods the meat salesman.
Very good point. I think there is also a lesson to be learned here. Football and sports in general are not a permanent life career. God willing there is life after football. I think Kevin is thankful for that life but the question is now what?
definitely a good look that he’ll be good
