Marketing Matters: Provacative ‘Dereon Girls Collection’ Ads Cause a Stir
Ad campaign features seductively posed JonBenet style models
Beyonce Knowles Carter’s recently launched the girls equivalent to her woman’s clothing line,”House of Dereon.” As part of the promotional push, they published advertisements the aforementioned “Dereon Girls Collection” featuring young Beyonce mini me style models seductively posed in the JonBenet Ramsey vain wearing make up, jewels and in one case, stilleto high heels.
The blogoshpere has been ablaze with buzz surrounding this ad, being that the little girls. in this ad are dressed too grown up. From a business/ PR standpoint this a huge misstep for the Beyonce/ House of Dereon camp. This country is willing to tolerate a lot of things even to the point where we make fun of peole like Foxy Brown or Remy Ma’s misfortunes however when you’re dealing with children that’s a very sensitive topic. With sick twisted men out there preying on and killing beautiful young ladies the likes of Lindsay Harris it makes our even younger children more vulnerable. I’m surprised Beyonce didn’t consult with her ultra child conscientious homegirl Kimora Lee on this. She would have put the kabash on that real quick.
Personally, it honestly wouldn’t have been my initial thought. Then again I’m not a woman and don’t have children so the ad doesn’t target me. Looking at it I see where they were trying to be kind of cute with the graphics but then again they took a calculated risk and judging by the early returns…they lost!

JonBenet Ramsey comes to mind when I see this.
Not a good look at all. What happen to pig tails and some cute kid ish? Not this grown folk stuff they got going on here…
u hit the nail on the head
I have a 2 year old girl and I would rather see these girls with no make-up, and some cute sneaks to go with these outfits - not some heels that are higher than my own!
This definitely doesn’t make me want to buy these clothes for my baby girl.
But, it doesn’t surprise me. I mean, Beyonce’s mom never did her justice when she designed her outfits, so the uglyness just trickled down…
But Modern Mami does it upset you? Do you think it sets a bad image for young ladies to wear heals and make up? I understand the clothes are wack. I’m just asking because you’re basically our resident expert as a parent.
I’d like to meet up with the parents that will actually purchase the clothes for their kids.
It’s disturbing that these kids are wearing heels. I didn’t even know they had heels in kids sizes. Why can’t kids be dressed like KIDS?
I think its the hands on hips and make up that disturbs me the most.
But they’re posing…as my daughter’s entire dance group does and has done…with the full required stage makeup…
and that’s acceptable to you Cynthia?
WHY IS IT THAT WE ARE NO LONGER LADIES?
WE LET BUTCH FEMALES AND PERVERTED MALES TURN OUR FUN INTO A CRIME? IF YOU NOTICE THE THEME IN THE FIRST ONE IS DRESS UP AND THE OTHER IS TEA PARTY! IF YOU LADIES DON’T REMEMBER PLAYING THOSE PARTICULAR GAMES THEN THAT IS SAD!!! YOU NEVER PUT ON YOUR MOM’S HEELS OR MAKE UP?
THIS IS AN ARTISTIC THEME, INNOCENT AS PLAYING DOUBLE DUTCH OR CAN WE NOT JUMP ANYMORE WITHOUT THAT BEING CONSIDERED DIRTY!!
Only problem Real Lady is that this isn’t dress up. These clothes are for sale. Someone wants your daughter to go to school wearing spike heeled boots with tight pants showing off their body. In a day in age when girls THIS young are beginning to become sexual active far before they’re ready we need to do all that we can to make sure we’re not promoting it through other means.
THE HEELS ARE REPRESENTING THE LADIES LINE, THEY ARE AVAILABLE IN LADIES SIZES ONLY IN THE SEPARATE LINE CALLED HOUSE OF DEREON TARGETING GROWN WOMEN, NOT GIRLS. THAT IS THE REASON IT IS A DRESS- UP THEME. WHEN YOU PUT ON SOMETHING YOU WOULDN’T NORMALLY WEAR LIKE WHAT YOU DO ON HALLOWEEN IT IS CONSIDERED DRESS-UP, I KNOW YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T PLAY THAT AS A CHILD DID YOU, JUAN?. THE CLOTHES ARE NOT TIGHT OR REVEALING ANY BODY PARTS.
AS FAR AS SEXUALLY ACTIVE CHILDREN YOU CAN MAKE A CHANGE BY GOING TO SPEAK AT THE LOCAL SCHOOLS AND ARRANGING COUNSELING, FOR THE CHILDREN AT YOUR DAUGHTER’S SCHOOL, NOT BY ATTACKING THIS INNOCENT ADVERTISEMENT, IT WILL GET YOU NO-WHERE!
IF THIS WAS A BACK TO SCHOOL AD I WOULD SEE YOUR POINT, BUT IT IS NOT TARGETING YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL ATTIRE, IT IS A SIMPLE PAIR OF JEANS AND JACKET, DRESSY ENOUGH TO WEAR TO A NICE DINNER OR MOVIE. I’M WASTING TIME ON YOU, THE ADVERTISEMENT OBVIOUSLY WENT OVER YOUR HEAD IN THE CREATIVITY DEPARTMENT. DON’T BELIEVE ME? TRY AND BUY THE HIGH HEEL ON THE DEREON WEBSITE IN YOU DAUGHTER’S SIZE, IT WON’T HAPPEN!!!!! THEY DO NOT SELL THEM FOR KIDS! IT WAS DRESS UP!!!!!!!
The pics aren’t the problem, the clothes aren’t totally the problem, its all about the intent…beyonce said “Even though it’s a junior line, I wanted to make sure I would wear it, and you would feel sexy and different in it.â€
I get that…Beyonce an adult wants to feel sexy and different, but my kids?? Um no thanks. I prefer they wait until they are adults before feeling the need to be “sexy”.
Poor taste.
exactly.
THE JUNIOR LINE IS TARGETING 25 YEARS OF AGE TO 17. THERE IS HOUSE OF DEREON FOR GROWN WOMEN, ALSO AVAILABLE KIDS, BABIES, AND TEEN LINE IS CYNTHIA. KNOW YOUR FACTS!
