HIGHBRID NATION EXCLUSIVE: Interview with AKADEMIKS Co-Founder Emmett Harrell
Urban Clothing Tycoon sits down with HN to discuss everything from their “Read Books…Get Brains” ad campaign to the tight-ass rockstar fashion phenomenon.
You might remember about about a month ago I took offense to some comments that Akademiks Co-Founder Emmett Harrell made in a recent issue of Format Magazine. Being the responsible bloggers that we are, we reached out to Akademiks to get Harrell’s response to my post. He invited us down to their showroom in midtown, Manhattan where we were able to not only ask him about the article but a wide variety of topics. Please bare with us on the videography and editing, we’re moonlighting bloggers not exactly Spike Lee here but I think you’ll all find the interview insightful. If not, feel free to bash us in the comment section below.Lastly let me say Emmett and his staff were very accommodating of Marcus and me. Shout to Christina Rice, one of the dopest publicists in the business for helping to put it all together.

big things poppin… great interview.
graci boss
i like the advice he shared. “everything will come in time” werd cause I’m taking digital media art degree that you learn how to work with photoshop, illustrator, flash (adobe products) and you could design and create your own website… my other boy is into designing clothes so 5 years from (if all goes well) i want to advertise his clothes and like other products.. is there money behind creating websites? like i know about “traffic” … we all could get money together if we put our 2 cents..so yeah thats my life
Yeah no doubt. I think if there’s one thing I’ve learned about business is there’s a lot of people who say they’d like to do things but there are very few that work hare ENOUGH to attain them. Kev…I grew up wanting to be a graphic artist but then they came out with this thing called the MAC (you might have heard of it) and it killed the game. Made graphic design so easy a caveman could do it. But graphics are making a comeback with the advancements of Flash and digital media. The key is to find your niche and be the best at it you can be. Hope that helps.
Great interview!
Good interview, at first I wasnt feeling the whole “we aren’t just Urban”, as if Akademiks didnt want any association with that title. But I agree, their clothing is tailored well and the clever slogans make you think. After visiting a D.E.M.O. store that carried alot of Akademiks I am a fan of their fashion.
The interview gave us a good insight to the work ethic behind Akademiks fashion. For the record I love me some Roccawear, SeanJohn, PhatFarm, the color schemes and sizes make it appealing to someone that is clueless on what to wear all while trying to look cute on a low-key Saturday afternoon.
