BUSINESS MATTERS: Jay-Z and Live Nation Officially Sign Deal

Posted by Juan

We break down the record $150 Million contract

Jay-Z

Billboard.biz is reporting that the rumored Live Nation/ Jay-Z 360-degree deal has been signed, sealed and delivered.

According to the report, Live Nation filed forms with the SEC which handing over 750,000 Live Nation shares, plus an options on an additional 500,000 more. The deal marks the formation the joint entertainment venture company, Roc Nation LLC. The unprecedented $150 million coup includes Roc Nation, as well as the rapper’s own recordings and tours for the next 10 years.

Ok kids get your calculators out. Live Nation will reportedly contribute $5 million each year to cover overhead costs for the next five years…you know bentley’s, rolley’s, cribs in the Hamptons. Another $25 million will go toward financing Jay-Z’s external acquisitions and investments, sponsorships, etc. Plus Jigga will get another $10 million per album on a 3 album deal. Jay-Z will also receive another $20 million for other rights including publishing and licensing just to make it all fair. Live Nation is ofc ourse getting the goods also, don’t sleep. The ends they’re seeing off the back of the sold out Jay-Z/Mary J. Blige tour makes them feel real good about signing on the dotted line.

UPDATE: Lyphe (Highbrid Nation since 2006) actually audited my math and noticed there is $50 mill missing. The overall package for Jay-Z also includes an upfront payment of $25 million and a general advance of $25 million that includes fees for his current tour accounting for the missing dough. I think Live Nation made a bad deal here with Jay-Z and also Madonna. They obviously were going after established stars but I think they have ended up with two stars who are a bit over the hill. I have no doubt Jigga will be making headlines for at least a couple more years but I think its already downhill for that guy. He’s 40 now, I don’t see him being a big player at 50.

Honestly I can’t see Hov rapping for 10 MORE years, but I can see him having his hand in a lot of quality acts like he had a Def Jam (Ne-Yo, The Dream, etc). More power to him on that deal tho.

Like the article said…he’s only got 3 more albums but his marketability is endless. Jay is now synonymous with Hip Hop as far as white corporate executives are concerned. He sells product and even though he’s getting older…he’s always been older than his target. Never stopped him before.
