Gas Prices Continue to Soar. Is there relief in sight?

Posted by Juan

Fed. survey measures American’s concern over crisis. How does the Gas epidemic affect you?

Gas Prices

The price of gas remains high atop the concerns of U.S. voters’ fears and is easily the country’s number one economic woe.  The price of gas nationally averaged $3.60 a gallon on Monday, according to the Energy Department.  Is there anything we can do about it?

Is there any relief in sight?  Although the presidential candidates have not (directly) made the gas crisis a huge part of their platform, each advocates “a plan” John McCain and Hillary Clinton both support the idea of a gax tax holiday over the summer, while Barack Obama opposes the tax break and advocates more alternative energy research.

According to a federal survey on how changes in the economy have affected people’s lives, about 44 percent of those questioned said paying for gasoline was a “serious problem” for them. Across all income levels, the cost of gas was the most frequently cited economic concern.  More than a quarter of households earning more than $75,000 a year described paying for gasoline as a serious problem. For those with incomes of less than $30,000, about 63 percent felt that way.

I know you’re as outraged as I am and I live in New York where I can easily supplement my transportation on the train.  For those drivers out there in the Nation what do you think?  What should be done?

Gas Prices are Ridiculous right now and affects almost everything I do. It’s gotten to the point were can’t even drive to work more than 1 or 2 days a week bike and public transportation is definitely the way to go.

I don’t think it’s going to do any drastic dropping. If anything it might just start to increase at a slower rate, unfortunately. There has been emails and text messages swarming about a “gas out” on Friday (May 2nd) but I’m not sure how much that will help, if at all. This is definitely a serious situation that needs to be dealt with immediately though. In NYC it is definitely a lot easier to use alternate modes of transportation but in places like say ORLANDO, a car is necessary. And I know Orlando isn’t the only place. Everytime I think of this gas crisis we’re in, I always think of Kat Williams’ stand up: “You should not be at the pump making life decisions! ‘Have I eaten today?’” RIDICULOUS!

  3. The US has been gambling for a long time. All research pointed to gas prices rising for I don’t know how long. Instead of putting serious money into renewable energy sources, the US decided to cut a deal here and cut a deal there. There is no quick fix to this. It could have been prevented had our government been more responsible. The only thing we can do now is put a ton of money into researching other energy sources and hope that we can survive the next few years before those fuel sources are ready for the consumer market.

    • But that’s the m.o. of our government…bid on the cheap. Let the next administration deal with the problem. Well now the problems is here in a HUGE way and people are going to be unemployed not because they can’t find a job but because they can’t get to work. All this gentrification and moving out into the suburbs may see a reverse trend.
As you said Mike, money needs to be pumped into alternative fuel sources. Sure we have Hybrid vehicles but you pay the extra in the money you save on the front end for the vehicle anyway. HELP!

Hybrid? I can’t afford to buy a hybrid. Single mother, bad credit due to divorce. I was ignorant to think I could get on my feet. Now I am screwed with the gas prices. I am begining to think this is about a bigger plan. Eliminate the middle people, it’s easier to control people when they are in smaller communities and can’t get around. But this will for sure back fire on the government. It’s one thing to up the prices of gas and allow them to keep rising. But when the cost of food starts becoming and issue, then you have problems.
