Has Hip Hop Declared Political Independence?

Posted by Juan

Does Generation Hip Hop have no allegiance to the Democratic Party?

Party Crashing

Hey what’s up Nation. Yesterday Forbes.com reviewed “Party Crashing: How The Hip-Hop Generation Declared Political Independence” by Keli Goff. According to the author, 35% of black Americans ages 18 to 24 considered themselves political independents.

Confused? The younger black Generation Hip Hop voters, according to her findings are no longer blindly voting for Democratic as our parents have (and still push us to.) We as the older Generation Hip Hop are establishing new ground from our parents and carving our our own niche…selecting new role models and new kinds of candidates.

Through a series of interviews with black Americans ranging from former Secretary of State Colin Powell to Russell Simmons, Goff demonstrates how our generation has broken from the politics of parents to blaze a new an non-partisan path, independent of the Democratic Party. Although much of the success we as a generation has experienced is in part due to the Democratic movement, Goff recognizes we have grown up without a universal cause, and without a universal political party.

I don’t know about you, but with all the buzz surrounding this political election I’m really hyped about this book. I even added it to our Amazon Store. I think Goff really has touched on something I’ve been trying to verbalize for a while. I might be a registered Democrat but does that mean I have to vote along party lines every time…for every one of these yohans that runs on the ticket?

I’m planning to cop the book and I hope those of you readers out there in the Nation do so too. In effort to force me to read more I’ve started The Juan Perez Book Club. Its not quite the extent of Oprah’s but I’ve got a list of titles here that I think might be interesting to our readers. From time to time I’ll pop in and share one or two with you. As always they’ll be available on Highbrid’s Amazon Store or you can get them at any local bookseller…(but buying them through us is always better…and appreciated!)

If you look under Books you’ll be able to search all the titles that I’ve selected specially for our readers. Most of the titles deal with Business, Marketing, Hip Hop and Politics but if there’s ever anything that you would like to recommend feel free to send me an email or leave them in the comments section. Well I’m going to go order Party Crashing. I’m a slow reader so I’ve gotta get a head start on yall. Happy reading!

I’m registered Independent. Mainly because I don’t fully agree either party’s platform. And at them same time, I hate the way the Democratic party takes the black vote for granted. Why do they deserve my vote? I’d rather play the middle and just pick the best person based on the candidate not their party.
