MARKETING MATTERS: Women’s Hoops Phenom, Parker Lands Gatorade and Adidas Deals

Posted by Juan

Take notice sports world, Ms. Candace Parker has finally arrived.

Candace Parker

The WNBA draft came and went to little fan fare. Although arguably woman’s basketballs most touted player in history, Ms. Candace Parker was selected first by the L.A. Sparks very few paid attention but you best believe Adidas and Gatorade did.  Today they announced that they have entered into a multi-year partnership agreements. Adidas declined to disclose the value of the deal. But according to Brandweek’s experts the deals should put her in the $3-4 million range combined.

Not surprising, the two mega brands are expected to align Parker who has been the face of women’s sports in marketing campaigns with their top flight NBA rosters.  There is also speculation that Adidas will also grant Parker her own signature shoe and become the face of adidas’ sportswear and accessories targeting women.  The launch of a Gatorade TV spot featuring Parker is expected to coincide with the start of the WNBA season in May.

Parker was the 2X National Champion, earned the Associated Press Player of the Year, ESPN.com Player of the Year, John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year, the State Farm Player of the Year and the Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Year. She will also represent the USA Women’s basketball team heading to Beijing in August.
