BUSINESS MATTERS: Will Jay and Beyonce Fall Victim to Post-Wedding Sales Slump?

Posted by Juan

Billboard says yes but I don’t know. We check out the facts.

BeyJay

Aight so its apparently very evident that Jay-Z and Bey are married.  We also know what the union can mean for their bread.  These are two artists whose stock has risen so much in recent years that they’ve transcended their music.  But will this power marriage hurt their core album sales?

According to Billboard.com such industry marriages have meant decreased sales for the bride in groom in recent times.  Take Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, both bombed on their next albums following their June 5, 2004 wedding. Lopez previous three albums Soundscaned at a combined 8.1 million in the US.  However,  Lopez’s post-wedding 2005 album, “Rebirth,” hovers at 731,000 copies and her newest 2007 releases Como Ama Una Mujer” and “Brave,” apparently are trash and currently Soundscan at 200,000 and 154,000, respectively.

On the other hand, Anthony had seven pre-marital albums (1994 – 2004) with combined sales of 2.5 million. His first post-wedding album, “Sigo Siendo Yo,” released in 2006 is currently at 151,000 copies and his 2007 album, “El Cantante,” is at 183,000.  Yuck! I think we did better than that with the VSOP Mixtape.

Aight you say Marc Anthony is no Jay and J. Lo can’t hold a flame to Bey well what about Nas and Kelis? Nas’ eight pre-marriage releases have sold a combined 11.3 million copies and Kelis’ chalk up to 785,000. After the nuptuals? “Hip Hop Is Dead” dropped to 755,000 and Kelis fell off to 157,000 with her “Kelis Was Here,” release.

Naturally we can attribute these dips to the overall downturn of the industry in general.  Artist just aren’t selling what they used to.  However one might have to think, do Jay and Bey loose a little sex appeal (if Jay ever had any) because they’re gotten hitched?  Perhaps that explains why Jay claimed ignorance saying “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” when fans congratulated him on the wedding last week at his Final 4 party at the 40/40.  Who knows…I think they’re stock is so high marriage will only by patrons, Jay-Z reportedly responded: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”  Aight…I’m bugging.  They’re bread is so long they can’t be stopped by no wedding lets get serious.

  1. A great marriage can bring in more endorsement deals. White America loves a great love story. If they do the damn thing right they can make millions off of being hitched. They’ll just have to admit that they are first and then getting the marketing ball rolling.

Maybe a Martha Stewart type branding for love birds or honeymoon themed Crazy In Love suites.

    Just playing…
