DNC Wrongly Blames McCain for Running Ads on Right Extremists Blog; Asks for Apology

Committe’s misinterpretation of Google AdSense leads to the party making an ass of themselves

JOhn McCain

The Democratic National Committee has been busy recently chirping at the John McCain camp regarding their placement of an ad run on the ultra conservative blog, Black Velvet Bruce Lee. The ads, which the Washington Post describes as designed to “to sign up members for his anti-illegal immigrant organization” were placed by Google AdSense’s context based ad manager.

The DNC claims that Greg L the right winged Northern Virginia based blogger’s regular attacks on illegal aliens (and I guess his general disgust for liberals) is a demonstration of hate. Now I don’t know about BVBL’s politics. Clearly we are on total opposite ends of the political spectrum but as a blogger in the collective blogosphere fraternity I’ve gotta side with “Red State Greg” and encourage the DNC to fall back… way back.

First of all, the DNC’s attacks displays a clear misinterpretation of how ads primarily appear on blogs and websites. In general, most bloggers such as Highbrid Nation subscribe to services such as Google Adsense to serve advertising for us because we simply don’t have the resources to sell them ourselves. Plus its much simpler and cleaner. Next, a basic understanding of the aforementioned service would show that in most instances the ads that are served are unique to the user browsing the site. Not only are ads served based on content but also based on geography so what I see here in New York may be different than what Evorgleb sees out in Pittsburgh. Hell the blogger himself may never even have seen the ads of which the DNC is referring to.

In Greg’s response he rightfully takes the DNC to task saying “ads for Mark Warner and Barrack Obama have appeared on this site, and it never seemed to bother [the DNC] before.” Although Highbrid Nation’s editorial board endorsed Obama on the Democratic side and McCain for the opposition, we’ve been served ads for Mark Warner and Hillary Clinton amongst others. Is it contradictory…perhaps. Will we block the ads from running? Of course not. We as bloggers and a Highbrid Nation welcome comments, visitors and viewpoints from all walks especially when discussing controversial issues.

Now I realize the beef was not with Greg, and was directed at the McCain camp but their arguments are based in logical fallacy so lets move on. Although I won’t pull the lever for McCain doesn’t mean that I won’t back him and his camp when I feel they’ve been wrongly challenged.
