The TV Movie will change the way travels a road unchartered
Among many historic firsts attached the the ABC movie “A Raisin in the Sun” perhaps its most underated and yet crowning achievement is its effect on the DVD marketing business.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Raisin has changed the way we view made-for-tv films. In the past television exposure meant a certain death on the home video market for retailers. And yet the film is one of the most highly anticipated DVD releases in recent memory. It used to be that TV movies, which actually could be seen for free on the small screen before they hit video, simply weren’t bought at all. And yet Marketers for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment ARE MAKING SURE folks know that “Raisin,” arrives on DVD only two months after its TV debut – a dramatic departure from the way things were done in the days of VHS. I for one MISSED raisins “one time only” premier and look forward to its May 6th release on DVD.
And so does Sony Pictures. According to the Hollywood Reporter, they will be launching an extensive marketing campaign to plays up the fact it’s the highest-rated movie of the week among women this season and was the No. 1 program among all households the night it aired. “Raisin” also was the first broadcast network TV movie to screen at the Sundance Film Festival.
