MARKETING MATTERS: MSNBC says baseball stars striking out in marketing world

Posted by Juan

Blame steroids and foreign-born players?

Jeter

There is an interesting article written by David Sweet over MSNBC discussing why even star baseball players have been striking out on Madison Avenue (Endorsements.) For generations, The Yankees were the biggest brand in all of sports and marketers would line the endorsement deals for its star athletes. Sweet discusses how steroids and the sports decline in popularity have adversely effected baseball’s marketability.

One might think that the Yankees Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter would rank tops among all athletes in off-the-field revenue. After all they’re talented, popular, handsome and play for the Bronx suckers Bombers. However “according to Sports Illustrated, Michelle Wie earned about $19 million in endorsements in 2007, dwarfing Jeter’s estimated $7 million and Rodriquez’ $6 million.”
