Tony Yayo’s Community Service Causes A Stir
Victim’s mother wants rapper to be seen as a criminal not a role model. I think I’ve heard this one before.
Rapper Tony Yayo has announced a court-ordered community service effort that will fulfill his requirement stemming from his guilty plea in the assault of a 14-year-old boy. Yayo, born Marvin Benard will engage in a campaign with The Book Bank Foundation, a teen literacy program as part of their inaugural Community Tour this week in New York.
However, the victim’s mother, Cynthia Reed is none to happy about it and has issued a statement saying she is prepared to protest the organization.
“It is irresponsible that Mr. Yayo is being presented as a role model to the same people he victimized and plead guilty in a court of law to having assaulted…”Shame on you [The Book Bank Foundation] for letting Marvin Bernard’s punishment look like willful charity.” the statement read. The Book Bank Foundation, which was founded in 1997 by Glenn Toby, reaches out to homeless youth and has distributed some $40,000 in annual donations. The goal of Yayo’s program was to visit various New York City schools and homeless shelters all week according to a statement from the organization.
I feel like I post on a similar story anytime a rapper attempts to do community service. Remember the court denying Snoop the ability to work with kids instead relegating him to picking up trash in the park? I know the victims or those afflicted want them to wear an orange jumpsuit and pick up trash on the side of the road but imagine the impact of his participation in the program that touches NYC school-aged Children. KIDS WILL ACTUALLY LISTEN.
The purpose of community service is to SERVE the community. Yayo probably wouldn’t be involved in this program if there wasn’t a court mandate however by participating he may actually see the changes he’s able to make in people’s lives and may continue his involvement long after the court mandate has dissolved. Its a win-win for everyone, INCLUDING YOU Ms. Reed. Give up the bitterness and look at the bigger picture.

What is the 4th, 5th return?

Good point. Everybody’s looking for that 15 minutes of fame these days. Does she expect Yayo to go to jail for life for beating up her son? If it was some kid from around the way, she wouldn’t have cared one way or another what happened to him. She just wants her name and face on tv. That’s sad because her son is probably passed it already.
“Mami, cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it!”
We can only learn from our mistakes. He’s not trying to evade punishment he’s trying to actually make a difference from his community service.
She’s mad she aint get a settlement.
