MARKETING MATTERS: Strapped Condom Ad Featuring Lil Wayne Misses “The Whole”
Maybe I’m being cynical (once again) But what does this ad say to YOU?!
Marketing DOES matter especially when it misses the mark. This ad represents what happens when Hip Hop business executives don’t pay attention to the DETAILS. This is one of the biggest marketing blunders since…yesterdays Fabolous/ Crocs disaster. Whoever was responsible for approving the ad missed an important detail. Lil Wayne bent over a police car with a a white man standing behind him whose hands (oh by the way) appear to be doing something unsavory. This all in effort to promote CONDOMS? Uhhhhh…not a good look at all. And peep Weezie’s face. What’s REALLY going on here. Obviously that wasn’t the intent but perception is everything in marketing.
I do want to send a strong shout to Omar and the dudes at Strapped Condoms however. They’re doing some tremendous things to not only build black business but raise PREVENTION awareness and safe sex campaigns. Its not easy competing with incumbent industry giants like Lifestyles and Trojan. So although the creative doesn’t exactly hit on this one, the message is clear, Stay Strapped!

When I first saw this ad – “safe sex” was NOT the message I got from it. To be honest, I still don’t get it! They definitely missed the mark.
To me it looks like lil wayne is getting arrested for something and while the officer in searching him he finds some strapped condoms in his possession. i get the whole “GO DOWN STRAPPED” point why people always gotta b so damn simple minded. people cant ever take a serious thing SERIOUS. its just a fuckin shame. This Man and this Condom company are doing a good thing to save ya’ll dumb asses and ya’ll wanna take it for a joke. Man grow up. Now when yo ass come up with sumthin you gon be dyin for help.
Are you serious? The whole thing was a joke from the beginning. We now have a culture that thinks its cool to have run ins with the law or to get locked up. Unfortunately the comapny behind this ad tried to capitalize on it and it fell flat.
And please lets not act like Lil Wayne and Strapped are doing these ads to “make the world a safer place”. They are in a partnership to make money. Nothing more, nothing less.
