Weinstein Company Purchase Rights To Bob Marley Biopic

Posted by Juan

The Film about Bob and Rita Marley’s LIfe is On!

Bob Marley

The Weinstein Company announced today that they’ve bought the rights to produce and distribute the first ever biopic on the immortal Bob Marley. The feature film will be based on the autobiography “No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley” written by his widow, Rita Marley.

The book details their lives together as the Marley empire grew from the streets of Trenchtown to international acclaim. Rudy Langlais (”The Hurricane”) will produce the flick while Rita Marley will look over his shoulder as executive producer.

If you’re a Marley head this is serious news. Never before has any movie been made about the legend…at least not in Hollywood. Bob and Harvey Weinstein are a huge win for the project. The two are responsible for both Miramax Films and Dimension Films. I know the film is still in concept but this should be one to look forward to. Early word is that Lauren Hill may play Rita in the film. Keep it locked as the cast takes form.

This is truly great news. I have one concern though… Seeing that this story is told in her eyes: How fair will she be in her interpretation of Bob Marley’s extra curricular activities and the fruits of those activities?

You have to read the book. I, obviously didn’t know the dude but she was objective. She gave her side as well. You have to consider cultural relativism.

Woman are a funny breed. So when I think about them talking about other woman I get skeptical. But yes, I need to put the cultural aspect into perspective.

I’ll find the book and ad it to my list. Is it in plain English?

The book title link is broken.

I just checked out the book on Google Books. They omit some of the pages but not all. But I’ll go and purchase the book to get a head start on the movie.
