MARKETING MATTERS: Halle Berry Announces Development Deal With Coty Frangrances
This Aint No Ordinary Endorsement. We Go Inside the Numbers.
Even as a pregnant women you should smell good and I guess if you’re Halle Berry you can make crazy dough too. According to Woman’s Wear Daily Beauty Giant Coty, has reached an agreement with my baby’s mother Academy Award-winning actress, Halle Berry on a “scent development deal.”
This is huuuge! Most often when I cover starts for the Marketing Matters feature we’re discussing endorsements. Coty has recruited Goddess Berry to begin developing a fragrance portfolio AS WELL AS appearing in its advertising in other words: CRAZY CAKE! How much? Well the terms are undisclosed but similar deals have netted 3 to $5 million up front, with a royalty of about 5 percent. J. Alba took home about $5 mil for a similar contract with Revlon last year.
“Halle is an iconic actress and symbolizes beauty to many generations,” Steve Mormoris, senior vice president of global marketing at Coty Beauty US, told WWD. “Halle has always been a little more mysterious, not quite as open with her personal life as some other stars. Her fragrances will allow her to present another facet of her personality to her fans.”

Good move. It’s always great seeing people extend their brand. Building the nest egg while the egg is still in the nest… Hard work never stops.
It’ll be interesting to see how they actually smell. They made such a big deal about Usher’s frangrance and it came out smelling like steaming hot trash.
This is very interesting. I don’t know if you’re aware, but Coty is a very old fragrance company. As a matter of fact, when I hear the name I think of bottles that I’d seen on my grandmother’s dresser when I was a little girl.
It is obvious that they want to move into the here and now and have selected Halle Berry to be the force. They certainly could not have done better, that’s for sure. This is probably a HUGE payday to get Berry on board. With her beauty and status she could really bring them back to the forefront of the market. Provided the fragrance is good of course.
I believe that they created Celine Dion’s fragrance also. I think that it’s doing well, but I’ve never smelled it.
Can’t wait to hit Macy’s up to see what it do. Thanks for the heads up.
