MARKETING MATTERS: Jay-Z & Lebron James’ BFF Relationship Should Worry Cavs Fans

Posted by Juan

Is there ANYTHING Cleveland Can Do to Keep James after 2010?

Lebron and Jay-Z

Jay-Z shared the stage with LeBron James at the now famed Two Kings Dinner during All-Star weekend. But was there a more sinister underlying business strategy behind the event. Yahoo Sports addresses the loophole in the NBA’s tampering policy that Jay-Z, a part owner of the New Jersey Nets may be using to appeal to the Superstar athlete in hopes of landing him when he can opt out of his contract in the summer of 2010. LeBron has publicly stated that beyond winning titles, he wants to become sport’s first billionaire athlete.

Sonny Vaccaro, one of sports marketing’s greatest minds has been monitoring this relationship closely. He’s one of a few responsible for convincing Nike to spend everything they had on North Carolina’s Michael Jordan. “Knowing LeBron and knowing the world as I see it,” Vaccaro said. The most appetizing thing would not be the New York Knicks for him, but the Nets with Jay-Z. Jay-Z is the one person that I can put in a parallel universe with LeBron from where they started and where they are now. If LeBron has a role model in life, it’s Jay-Z. I’ve never been around a more perfect match of young genius. What would be better than these two kids in New York?

Vaccaro describes this sort of perfect marketing storm. New Jersey has been clearly looking to “get younger” recently banishing Jason Kid. Vince Carter’s expiring contract curiously aligns with Jame’s opt-out year and the possible endorsement opportunities following a Gold Medal in Beijing are simply unimaginable. Could his marketing stock at that point dwarf that of Tiger woods? When it comes to branding, nothing and nowhere could be bigger for James’ global profile than becoming “the King” of New York

On the flip side Cavs owner, Dan Gilbert (whom I originally reported incorrectly as Ken Gilbert) has already foreseen the potential departure and has been proactive in the trade market acquiring Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West, evidence that he’s adopting a win-now philosophy. Even with a chance at a perennial title, the attractiveness of New York may be too much for James. His growing friendship with Jigga pre-dates his days in the NBA and may ultimately render the Cavs powerless. Furthermore, the Nets have already begun to establish an internal business plan for the move into the new Brooklyn arena that includes a budget line for James eventual recruitment, estimates of his marketing worth and the salary-cap space needed for his signing…and that’s what’s public!

So you’re saying: What about the fact Cleveland’s his hometown? I say so what?! James has already shown a disloyalty to the city by adorning a Yankees hat at an American League division series game at Jacobs Field. To add insult to injury Nike will release a LeBron-Yankees shoe planned to street in March. I hate to say it Cavs fans but this is shaping up to be a loss that more crushing than Jordan over Ehlo.

if Lebron wants to solidify he legacy, he’ll try hard to stay in Cleveland. There is nothing bigger than the legend that a player creates than in becoming a franchise player for a small city. But hey, gotta make that money and in today’s age players often pick cash over legacy.

I hope Lebron stays in cleveland. when he came to the league, i was impressed with his desire to play for his hometown squad. in my mind, he seperated himself from the many drones who tend to choose the biggest paycheck, and (as Evorgleb alluded to) turning a town like Cleveland into a perrenial championship city (inevitable if he stays) will raise his status into the Living Legend category.

that said, if Jay has decided to net (pun intended) him, Lebron’s decision may get made for him. this is the same cat that left a label he started to take over Def Jam, eventually breaking the stalemate of the rap battle with rival newyork rapper Nas by SIGNING him, and left defjam for an even sweeter deal with apple’s fledgling music label… plus he dates BEYONCE, guys! this is a guy who GETS what he WANTS!!!

I think Jay-Z is the key here. Thanks GhettoManga for your comments. Jay-Z is almost exploiting a loophole in the NBA’s tampering law. Teams have lost draft picks for doing what he’s doing but being a Minority Owner and the fact that their friendship predates his NBA days makes it unprosecutionable. I also can’t sit here and say that this wasn’t Ratner’s plan all along when he thought about moving the Nets to BK and let Jay-Z tag along on his ownership team. Remember although he’s only been in the league what 5 years, he’s been touted since High School.

If Lebron wants to become a Billionaire he’s going to need to pass Jordan and Tiger. That’s saying a lot. It probably won’t happen but it DEFINITELY won’t happen in Cleveland. My advice? Start selling those Lebron Jerseys on Ebay.

im from cleveland, and if lebron left today i wouldnt be mad at all, he got us in the championship last year, and thats all you can ask from a athlete is to just give us a chance and he did that. its a even better look for the league if we got someone of that magnitude in the media capital of the world, he is destinied for NY, this cavs fan has embraced it, and he will get us in the championship again this year, by 2010 he will have us a ring, then he can go to new jERSEY with jigga, i want to see it myself.

It’s a definite possiblity…and it’ll be a “GREAT” Look for NY, specifically BK. He would have a key to the city for any and everything… But I remember Jay-Z saying a while back that we wouldn’t use his friendship…IF HE HAD A GOOD TEAM. So basically the Cavs gotta be contenders every year to prevent that from happening. here’s the jay quote right here:

JAY-Z: ” ‘How amazing would that be? I tell people all the time, he’s my friend first. If Cleveland is building a championship team around him then my advice is to stay there.”
