Avoid the Hassle of Internet Job Sites, Differentiate Yourself With A Video Resume

Posted by Juan

Perfect Solution in this Trying Job Market

Video Resume

Although I’m officially (and permanently) unplugged from the 9 to 5 matrix, I do realize that in this trying economy the job market is very competitive. I’m sure many of you out the in The Highbrid Nation have flocked to sites like Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com to post your resume only to slug it out with the seemingly millions of other candidates. Well there may be an alternative that will help you differentiate yourself. Video Resumes!

Traditionally reserved for job seekers who make their career in front of the camera, video resumes allow you to endear yourself to prospective employers by conducting a controlled interview environment where you ask…and answer the questions. VideoJobShop.com gives jobseekers “a new way to connect” by taking advantage of the ease of digital film making and the popularity of the internet video phenomenon championed by YouTube. It even lets you create a widget where you can share your resume on Facebook.  Looking for applicants? VideoJobShop also allows employers to post their own video wanted ads.

I took a quick peak. The site is obviously very new and does not yet have much content. Although there were quite a few Job posts (mostly tech…for obvious reasons) there were only 3 video resumes. I guess that means you’ll have less competition. Regardless, with the ease of video, think outside the box…create your video resume attach it to your email cover letter and stand out from the crowd.

That is actually not a bad idea, for small time cinematographers like myself that is a good business stratagy. I already took the documntary process and make it for the average person then adding video resumes to the package will just help increase that innovative business….good look.

The only downside I see to it though is the fact that if employers start to look at the production value of a video resume instead of the potential employee, people who have less resources will lose out on getting jobs.

I think taking the approach in the video that your skills lie with whatever the job requires rather than making video demonstrates your creativity while allowing you the opportunity to display your strengths.

This tactic I think is useful for individuals looking to separate themselves as a candidate for a job that receives many resumes.
