MARKETING MATTERS: McDonald’s Sponsorship Threat Forces BET to Pull content from its website

Posted by Juan

Ads rule the world

B Girls

According to a speculative report by MediaPost.com, McDonalds threatened to bag its advertising from a section of BET.com titled “B-Girls.” The feature apparently solicits female reader to submit sexy candid, many of which have been posted featuring risqu clothing and sexually suggestive poses.

Not surprisingly the request from McDonalds coincided with the prompt removal of the “B-Girls” section entirely on Jan. 16. According to the report, BET released a statement saying the removal had always been planned and was “unrelated” to “any advertiser feedback, of which there was none.” However, McDonald’s said in a release that it “reached out to BET to express our concerns and to ensure that this placement does not happen in the future.” McDonald’s, which contacted BET via its media agency, also said that the content “in no way represents the values of our brand.”

Marketing Matters! A title was never more true. I’ve said it time and time again. Regardless of what media you’re in, your sole objective in this game is to keep your advertisers happy. Although your audience is your base you can’t serve them without ad dollars.

    This is an absolute shame!

A lot of our community has been up in arms about BET’s online and television material. But it takes the sponsorship of McDonald’s being threatened for them to make any kind of adjustment. Well it’s obvious what’s up with BET at this point, “No money in proramming, no voice in programming.”

    Just ridiculous.

Well BET obviously has its priorities twisted. This is evidenced by their putting the hammer down on the Boondocks episode roasting their upper management. Bottom line is it promotes a message. If their living to deal with that message morally they’ll have to deal with the consequences financially. McDonald’s if you remember along with Coca Cola were the first two ad sponsors for BET and ran on serious rotation when the network first aired.
