Does Obama’s Historic Landslide Vic in SC indicate that voters are more savvy than Racial and Gender Politics?

Without a Doubt

Hopefully you all weren’t too busy over the weekend to catch the news of Barack Obama‘s historic win. Although I by no means am advocating him and have yet to make up my mind who I’ll vote for on Super Tuesday, I couldn’t help but notice his LANDSLIDE drubbing of Hillary Clinton and John Edwards. (By the way Johnny you can’t get pummeled in your own state and stay in the election. Gracefully bow out.)

“After four great contests in every corner of this country,” Obama said in his victory speech. “We have the most votes, the most delegates, and the most diverse coalition of Americans that we’ve seen in a long, long time.” His win was no doubt decisive but carried an underlying message given the historic nature of race and class politics in the state of South Carlina.

Obama won about a quarter of the white vote overall including half of young white voters, on his way to a commanding 55% of the total vote to just 27% for Hillary and a dismal 18% for Edwards. But lets dive deeper into the 78 percent of black voters who supported Obama? Prior to the primary, Bill Clinton visited Greenville looking for support for his wife’s campaign. However nearly 80% of those precincts said nahhhhh we’ll take Obama.

I must give Bill Clinton credit, he has risked tarnishing his legacy with black Americans who once endowed him the “First Black President” instead standing by his wife in attacking Obama’s character, calling him Jesse Jackson of 2008. A loosing strategy but a bold and courageous one none the less and for that he deserves credit.

So heading into the ever important Super Tuesday primaries there isn’t a more powerful message that Sen. Obama’s camp can send; voters are voting for him not because of his skin color OR THEIRS but because they believe in his policy. Even the Kennedy camp is standing behind Obama equating his stately demeanor and presence to the late JFK.

So after all the political dust has settled and its that election ballot staring you in the face on February 5th will you choose to elect or reject Obama because of the color of his skin or instead make a responsible decision to endorse a candidate who YOU feel gives our country the greatest chance for change.

good article and while like you I have not made up my mind. to me it sounds like you are rooting for Obama in ths article. just my thoughts.

  2. S Dot Stylus says:

Rooting is quite different from voting. My vote is quite valuable and very important. I need to vote for a candidate that represents not only my best interests but those of my family. You’d be surprised.

i think all it shows is that they were told what to do by oprah, and denzel, and did it. as i stated earlier, with hillary, you get bill, the only president since nixon to ever balance a budget. contrary to popular belief, there are alot of black people who care about the economy. if peple in south carolina were so politically astute, why are their schools last in the nation? therefore their opinions mean nothing to me

  4. ms. Hancock, you so gangsta, I totally feel you.

  5. deanna hancock says:

thanks for the compliment MR> DOS UN. i have been called alot of things in my life, never gangster. all my friends & family, even the white ones call me ‘white girl’. STAY BLESSED!!!!!

  6. I sure will, I love your opinions and how you get them across. I hope you continue to visit and tell your people bout us. you have a blessed day also and be safe

  7. deanna hancock says:

thanks Mr. Dos UN. i tell people about you daily. hope you all STAY BLESSED up there in the big city

Agreed Deanna, As you’ll note, although my article skews towards Obama I do indicate that I’m still yet decided who I will vote for on Super Tuesday. I love the man and am very proud but does he represent my best interest…I have yet to determine that. White, Black, Asian or as I am Black-Hispanic it makes no difference. His color isn’t putting food on the table, but our President’s policies may.
