NY Times Writer asks: “What Do Real Thugs Think of The Wire?”
Very interesting commentary.
In doing some background research for the my previous post on Lance Riddick’s plans beyond the Wire. I came across a really cool article (or series) written very eloquently by Sudhir Venkatesh of the New York Times. I’m a huge fan of HBO’s THE WIRE and in fact think its arguably the best show on TV since The Cosby’s. Its’ developed almost a hood cult following but ironically enough its not only its elements of drugs and violence that appeals, but the writing, plot and character development are far superior to anything we see today.
Naturally, drug dealers and henchmen past and present gravitate to the show. Vankatesh, who I’d seriously doubt is one of them, decided to entrench himself in the projects and watch the entire season each week with a crew of former hustlers, documenting their reactions to the show while chilling an sharing a few pork rinds and hot sauce.
This week’s article detailed his session watching episode 3 of this, the final season; specifically their reactions to Butchie’s assassination. The unanimous sentiment in the room is clear: no thug could have “survived on the streets without a Butchie (played by S. Robert Morgan) in their pocket.”
Its very interesting. I gotta make sure to check it out each week. I’m going to go back and see the two previous installments that I missed already. I suggest if you’re a real Wire fan you do the same. Paz.
