By now you all know that the Writers Guild of America has been on strike for quite some time picketing every television show imaginable. The guild writers have been looking for a new contract and the two sides are so far apart that it looks like the organization will probably still be striking through next month’s Grammy’s and Oscar’s.
One interesting thing to note however is that it looks like the NAACP Image Awards will be the only show that the writers actually DO write for. WHY?! Well “Because of the historic role the NAACP has played in struggles like ours, we think this decision is appropriate to jointly achieve our goals,” guild leader Patric Verrone said at a news conference.
Wow! This is big…very unprecedented. A major Hollywood organization, albiet a union, will grant an exception and ONLY allow its writers to write for a minority run award award show because of the recognition of their struggle for social equality and civil rights. Martin…its a step!
On the other hand the cynic in me recognizes that this could actually be a bad thing for the NAACP. In my opinion the Grammy’s and Oscars productions this year will be IMPROVED because of the strike because viewers will actually be saved the long boring scripted award introductions which will be likely replaced by pre-recorded montages of each nominee.
