I am a 16 year old junior in high school and im doin a project on the word nigger or nigga? personally i do use the word to identify my friends ex “whas good my nigga, or nigga please” when i use the word i dont even realize i say it. I know this post is a little old but here it is…

First of all let me start with a little history lesson. Many Puerto Ricans (Taino Indians) were raped, enslaved and murdered when the Spaniards came over the Islands. There were Africans brought over for labor that were sold to the Spaniards by Africans to fund their own tribe wars going on in their regions. So right now many Puerto Ricans have the African gene due to slaves, indians and Spaniards mixing it up to include many other European folks coming over the Islands later on. So where am I going with this? Well in my opinion just like many black people would say we (Puerto Ricans) are just as black as African Americans are so this plays a big part as to why many Puerto Ricans get away with the word. I grew up around blacks damn near all my life being from Newark, NJ but I don’t use the word. In my opinion is if a black person can use it then anyone else should be able to use it. Actuallly if you would look down the line of latinos, you will find African descendants are in their blood line, so technically latinos, whether they are puerto rican, dominican, cuban or from the carribean you will find that majority of them are of african and spanish descent. Who cares what name someone calls you?? So what if I decide to call you a “doodoo” or a “poopoo”? If I want to say nigger, I’m going to say it. I don’t care. I’d be exercising my right to free speech if I said it. Whats okey for some people might not be okey for others. Some blacks might be okey if their non black friends says it but if just some white guy rolls up on them and go like “Whats up my nigga?” the reaction might be “Who the fuck are you to call me nigga white boy?” Some might be okey when non white people says it because in the beginning it was white people who used racial slurs or racial names, often in a derogatory manner. Back then, because of the white worlds dominiance in large parts of the world, colored people was viewd as inferior to white people. A lot of blacks might feel okey well, our ancestors was slaves, so was yours, white people took you as slaves as well, the exploited your country, well shit we´re in the same boat. A feeling of brotherhood or fellowship might arrive and the wouldent take offence when maybe a latino would use the world.
But then some might feel that its a 100% black thing, it was first used against us, to degrate us, we was the ones hurt by it so now when we use it amongst ourselfs everybody wants to use it. Because rap has become mainstream. I bet if there was no rap NO whites at all would want to walk around using the word nigga. But due to hip hop, who sprung out of black coulture, people are influensed by the “black” or “black ghetto” slang, the word nigga being one of them. So now everybody wants to use it. I say its mostly because of rap going mainstream that whites wants to use the word nigga.
But yet again, some blacks feel you have to be black to use it. They are not okey with a latino using it who sometimes is almost as dark as they are. The use of the word nigger unsettles me regardless of the colour of the mouth that speaks it. I’m mixed race, and for a long time was pretty much the blackest kid in my town (surprising because I am not black). One day when I was walking home from school a man shouted nigger at me out of his car, it made me sick, there is just no defence to something like that.

First of all, the puerto rican and black communities living in the Bronx have always been very close. Also, not all latinos are the same. Puerto Ricans in particular have a west-african element to them. (think roberto clemente, vic power, etc. all of whom ere referred to as “niggers” by white americans) Most puerto ricans are mixed, and it is highly likely that Fat Joe is too. Btw, Puerto rico had african slave labor from 1500s to late 19th century.

Look, it’s as simple as this. I’m a 30 year old black male from Philadelphia and I do feel weird about Puerto Ricans using that word. Now, understand that the standard for so-called racial identification was and is the one-drop rule and those of my younger brethren who deny it will find it increasingly true as they experience life. This defined the difference between “White folk” and “Colored folk”, and included people who appeared frankly Caucasian as well as those who appeared to be completely African, who were often closely related by blood. One ancient reason for the importance of the black family reunion was so that those relatives of radically different appearance would be able to recognize each other, both to observe the bonds of kinship and also to avoid marriages to blood relatives.

“Colored” morphed into “Negro” without a change in the population group it referred to, and later Negro to “Black” (having nothing to do with skin color).

Thus, Latinos of Carribean Ancestry are actually of the same admixture and in days gone by, (prior to 1960), were classified as Colored.

Thus, Fat Joe, J Lo, whoever, are of African descent and had ancestors who suffered in the plantation system, then came to the cities of the North and faced discrimination, not just based on skin color but language as well.

In the sixties, their parents generation may have joined the Black Student Unions, the NAACP and other groups.
