BUSINESS MATTERS: Mays and Benzino spit venom about XXL and Elliot Wilson Firing

Posted by Juan

Mays also shamelessly plugs their new upcoming project

David Mays

MahoganyGirl caught up with the former heads at The Source, Dave Mays and Benzino to get their reactions to the Elliot Wilson firing. (I believe she’s Dave Mays ex-wife.) The embattled duo who are co-founders of Hip Hop weekly are obviously very bitter about their departure had some choice words and shared where we might see them again.

Benzino:

“Karma is a muthafucka!!! The little bitch should have been let go years go if you ask me… When I heard about this I thought it as beautiful…He (Elliot Wilson) doesn’t represent Hip Hop or he culture anyway. XXL and all the editors over there are just copy cat of The Source and now them, Source and Vibe are feeling the fucking pinch….Now Yellow Nigga (Elliot Wilson) can go get a job sucking f*cking Jimmy Iovine since that’s what he was going anyway…G Unit is over and so is Elliot. If I see him in the streets I’ma put a foot in his ass…I’ma do that for Hip Hop…”

Well said Benzino, very eloquent. Lets check in and see what the paler, self-promoting and more sophisticated Dave Mays had to say:

Dave Mays:

“It’s no coincidence that Elliot’s firing comes just a few weeks before the impending launch of MONSTA magazine, which will introduce the world to a new blueprint for the monthly magazine, a more advanced format that delivers exciting, relevant and informative content to the new generation of hip hop fans. Elliot’s firing signals the end to an old-fashioned way of publishing magazines that is no longer viable, which explains why all of the current monthly mags—from XXL to The Source to Vibe—are struggling in continuing to try to operate in away that doesn’t work in the new age of media and of hip hop. Benzino and I are pioneering a new approach to hip hop magazine publishing which—given the impact of Hip Hop Weekly in just its first year—is already proving itself; we are extremely excited to show the world our new vision when MONSTA magazine debuts on newsstands at the beginning of next month!”

Well thanks for the shameless plug there Mays. If you buy into their logic it looks like we may see a few prominent magazines folding in the coming months. Its not a big stretch as there has been a lot of buzz around the industry recently about this same topic because of the declining ad revenue generated. Looks like they need Highbrid Outdoor.

  1. I find their remarks funny. They ran the Source into the ground and they fee they are in a place to talk about the job someone else did?

Elliott Wilson I think had a much better idea of how to make a mag survive in the age of digital media and that was by intergrating the mag with an online destination. XXL could have been much more intergrated with XXLMag.xom. On the other hand, the Source’s website has always sucked. Hip Hop Weekly’s website (which is basically a tabloid) is just as bad.

I think Wilson’s downfall came when he started thinking of himself as some sort of media god. That along with the 50 Cent nut riding. There is no excuse for the same rapper appearing on the cover 3 or 4 times in the same calender year.
