“Black” Is the New “Green”: Introducing Blackle the Energy Saving Search Engine

Posted by Juan

Search Engine boasts energy conservation savings

Go Green

In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year caluculated that if the Google Search Engine were to switch its background to black it would save 750 Megawatt-hours a year.  Naturally there was a bit of skepticism about the significance of the energy savings and whether such a design would cause the site to loose visitors.

Heap Media took the savings very seriously and intern created Blackle, a simple search engine powered by Google Custom Search. Their premise is simply to remind everyone to take small steps towards energy conservation.

According to their website “Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. ‘Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.”

So there you have it Tree Huggers of America.  With everything going “Green” these days its nice to see “Black” get some recognition in a positive “light.” lol.

Best of all its got the ‘similar page’ option in the result page like the normal white Google. I use that a lot.
