Hood Review- The Big Doe Rehab

Album of the Year Hands Down

There’s a story on H.N. about Maxim naming Jay-Z’s American Gangster album “Album of the year”. It’s obvious no one in the Maxim offices took the opportunity to listen to Ghostface Killa A.K.A. Tony Starks latest LP The Big Doe Rehab.

At this stage in my life their are only a select few artist that actually move me to walk into a retail outlet and purchase their album. Ghostface is one of these select artist, and he reminded me why he’s on that list with this classic lp. The Album starts with a classic Wu-Tang/ Ghostface style skit (Who does skits better than the Wu remember “Woodrow” the crack head, “Blue and Cream Wallabees”, & “Yo Meth where’s my killa tape Gard”) “At the Cabana” where Ghost smacks up some Spanish dudes for shortin him on doe/drugs. Which leads into the Banger “Toney Sigel A.K.A. The Barrel Brothers” feat. Beanie Sigel. Joint is straight fire. Ghost and Beans spit one verse each and Beans goes in. His verse is not even finished when the song fades out.

The melodic “Yolanda’s House” is classic storytelling rap from Ghost you have to listen real close to keep up with the story which includes Ghost busting into Meth’s Crib to hide while Meth is effing his girl and catching him butt naked. Raekwon ends the song from his perspective. “We Celebrate” Feat. Kid Capri is the single off the Big Doe Rehab and just displays Ghost lyrical talent over a hard bass beat. “Walk Around” and “Yapp City” where Ghost’s Theodore Unit Brethren represent are straight gutter joints about spazzing out, robbing niggas all that wild street shit. You will be turning the volume up on those songs and wearing out the cartilage in your neck.

“White Linen Affair” shows why Ghost is in a class by himself and has to be considered one of the greatest Emcees off all time. This song is a product of Ghost’s vivid imagination where he raps about a fantasy award show that he hosts where everyone in entertainment is present from D-Block to Merrill Streep. “SUPA GFK” has Ghost appealing to the females bragging about his macking skills. Honestly he bites the whole concept from Redman but that’s his man, and he reps it right so it’s cool. THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST EIGHT SONGS PEOPLE!

Rec Room Therapy has a rare cameo from U-God, while the “Prayer” has an Artist named “Ox” singing acapella and killing it! Reminds me of Anthony Hamilton a lil bit.

“I’ll die for You” shows a thug soft side of Ghost where he rhymes about the people in this world he would literally die for. “Paisley Darts” is another classic Wu-Style song. Gritty Soul Sample where about 8 nice emcees air it out including Cappadonna. There’s also a funny skit at the end where Ghost at a live show in L.A. declares that 98% of rap niggas is p**sy and says “…..From Rap nigga to Rap nigga, I’m telling you this cause I know these niggas” LOL!

I know what your thinking “No Ghost and Rae back and forth joint” that’s where “Shakey Dog Starring Lolita” comes in Rae and Ghost tell a detailed story which ends with Ghost going out guns blazing against law enforcement. You then have two Bonus Tracks “Killa Lipstick” feat. Method Man and “Slow Down” feat. Chrisette Michele.

The bottom line is: this album solidifies Ghostface’s Legacy in Hip-Hop; the man consistently drops hot, uncompromised, gutter, and creative albums. Name a hotter more unique hip-hop artist than Ghost…. I’m waiting! Dude can’t be imitated or duplicated. If you appreciate quality hip-hop go and cop “The Big Doe Rehab” right after you finish doing the “Soldier Boy” dance. (GAME BLOUSES)!

Great review!! Even though I’m already a Wu fan, i think I’ve had a bad taste in my mouth since the Ironman LP when it comes to Ghost. I may have to grab this one though.
