Amazon to Launch the iPod of Reading?
New Device said to revolutionize how people read. Is Amazon too late and lacking of tech platform? Many Questions Remain.
Is it too late for Amazon to get into the tech device game? Well in a world dominated by Microsoft and Apple is it possible for Amazon, the world’s largest drop shipper to become a viable force in the tech device game? Well in Newsweek’s seven page feature, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announces the company’s intentions to do so.
Introducing the Kindle, book publisher’s answer to the iPod. But don’t get it twisted Bezos says, “this isn’t (just) a device, it’s a service.” The Kindle which will run for $399 and will start shipping today is perpetually connected to the internet and will use Amazon’s sophisticated storefront to allow users to browse for books (88,000 at launch,) magazines and newspapers and buy them in a “one-touch process.” It also comes with a personal Kindle email address (similar to T-Mobile’s sidekick) and lets you browse the REAL internet like the iPhone. Book titles will mostly range from classics at $1.99 to New York Times bestsellers and hardback new releases will go for $9.99.
So what is the real life application for people like us? Well I’m not a huge reader…I do read the newspaper and some magazines but not enough to warrant owning a product like this. But as my cohort JReid360 called to my attention, this could be huge development for the student. No longer would students be forced to lug around huge textbooks and literary novels, instead opting for the handy tool which gives them instant internet access as well.
The 10.3 ounce device is said to hold up to 200 books which can be expanded with memory cards and is said to get up to 30 hours of reading on a single battery charge. Bezos and Newsweek have yet to reveal whether the Whispernet internet service is included in the price of the device (probably not) If not what will it be and who will provide it?

Pretty cool in funtion but it looks like something I would have used in computer class in like 1985
Yeah Gleb, when asked why it looks so plain they said they wanted it to look like “an austere vessel of culture.” Whatever that means.
ITS COOL BUT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO HAVE ONE BUY THE END OF THE DECADE WILL SAVE WAY MORE TREES THAN ANY RECYCLING!! NO MORE NEWSPAPERS MAGAZINES OR BOOKS!! IT WOULD HELP ALOT! A WHOLE LOT! DO YOU SEE HOW MANY NEWSPAPERS GET PRINTED EVERY DAY!! GOODNESS!! ITS CRAZY!! BUT WILL DEFINITLY HELP!! ITS A GOOD START!! SHOULD BE CHEAPER A HUNDRED DOLLARS!! IF YOU CAN SELL A SONY PSP FOR 200 DOLLARS AND YOU CAN PLAY VIDEO GAMES AND GO ON THE INTERNET!! THIS SHOULD BE HALF THE PRICE
Supply and Demand Jonathan. Agreed it will save paper. I was focusing on the academic uses. Naturally both will be marketed as potential reasons why everyone should own one.
Seems like a bit of a money pit to me. Why pay for newspaper subscriptions when you can get almost everything online for free? The wireless anywhere feature is pretty nice, but this feels like something that hasn’t reached its full potential yet. It says you can read blogs on it, but you have to pay a monthly fee! That’s a hard sell if I’ve ever heard one…
i agree jonathan, very good point
Good point Frank…If you have unlimited Internet Access why not just look at your favorite Magazines and Newspapers on the browser instead of subscribing. A little bit of a glitch.
Sony had a similar product a type of reading tablet and you could cop the books of amazon I guess amazon said eff the middle man
Yeah I was looking at that unit the difference was it didn’t have its own modem. It required a USB hookup.
