Hood Review- American Gangster LP

Today Jay-Z drops his American Gangster LP which is supposed to be inspired by the American Gangster Movie. I’ll keep it short the LP is weak. Most of it comes off very uninspired and thrown together. There are a few highlights like “Success” which features Nas and “Ignorant Shit” feat. Beanie Siegel  and “Roc Boys”  the current radio single. Songs like “No hook” “American Dreamin” and “Pray” just fall short. Then there’s the confusing “Hello Brooklyn” which features of all people New Orleans native Lil Wayne who’s been dissing Jiggaman for about 2 yrs now. Weezy’s  sing songs through his verse and in the end the song is trash. The other tracks are completely forgettable.

Listening to this album is like watching your favorite athlete in his last years, Jordan in his Washington jersey, Mike Tyson’s Debacle, and most recently Roger Clemens this past season in NY. You want so bad for them to do well but they just don’t have it anymore. I think Hov has fell victim to his own hype, his unnatural ability  to whip up hits and albums w/o any effort by just listening to the beat and “vibing” for a minute is legendary. You always hear people speak about how their amazed he doesn’t write his rhymes down, and hear Jay himself say he puts his album together in a matter of weeks. I really think he needs to consider sitting down and taking his time putting his music together if he plans to release more albums. If not we’ll be talking about Jay like an athlete who played one season too many.

ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKIN MIND? WHO HAS A BETTER ALBUM OUT NOW? DID YOU EVEN LISTEN TO THE FUCKIN ALBUM? YOU ARE JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE HOV HATERS OUT THERE! YOU HATE TO ADMIT THAT HE STILL GOT IT!!

Calm down sir. I’m one of the biggest Jay fans out there I have his entire catalog and can recite most of his songs of my dome. So I’m in no shape or form a “Hov Hater”. I’m just calling it as I see it. Listen to previous Jay albums and then go back and listen to this one it’s not the same. With that being said keep in mind I’m comparing this Jay-Z effort to other Jay-Z efforts and not other rap artist. Which is a compliment.

great review. this album was really hyped. when we debuted Blue Magic here on HN people went crazy with the hov nut riding. but the song was weak. it was like people wanted to love the song cause we all love Hov (el pauso). we all fell victim of the hype. even jay himself. I think you are right 4pl, he needs to take like a year a put together an album worthy of his own name.

OK, I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT YOU’RE COMPAIRING THIS TO HIS OTHER ALBUMS BUT THERE ARE 3 HOV ALBUMS THATS BETTER THATN THIS AND THEY ARE REASONABLE DOUBT. BLUEPRINT. AND MTV UNPLUGGED (ONLY CUZ OF MY LOVE OF LIVE MUSIC). BUT ALL IN ALL THIS ALBUM IS FAR FROM WEAK!! LISTEN TO IT AGAIN AND THIS TIME LISTEN TO THE LYRICS DONT JUST HEAR THEM, AND THEN DO AN ALBUM REVIEW.

One thing that I used to always say about Jay and this is from a totally objective standpoint because he’s not my favorite emcee nor was he ever but his work was always ART. I had a greater appreciation for it the more and more I listened to the album. Like with BIG I still listen to a BIG song and get something new with each listen…I’m not sure its true any more.

I think the reports of Jay-Z’s demise are premature however he does need to step up his game. He’s falling victim to my ole chocolate theory Dos Un.

Blue Magic was far from wack btw Gleb.

“Do you listen to music or do you just skim thru it”. thats quote sums up this review in a nutshell. i will not take away from you that you are a jay z fan but u prob only recite the singles and cant remember the b side of his albums. “Success” is a very powerful song as you did point out but you dont point out the imagery in “Pray” or “American Dreamin”, …”they just fall short”. You dont even make a statement on “Fallen” which has uber-imagery and potent lyrics. Also shows the audience “theres heaven and it hell nigga”. What about the duality of “I Know” but i wouldnt expect you to cuz ur just skimin’. Even when i was skim’in i heard all of these and “we are both” jay z fans. The flaws i believe that are in this album are “Ignorant Shit” and “Party Life”. “Ignorant Shit” just cause it was re released but when that song initially came out, it was fire. I see it as a flaw cuz im a jay z fan but if you never heard the song before its prob somethin to highlight. “Party Life” cuz it seemed it was “just a lazy boy, sittin in his Laz-E-Boy” but this had potent lyrics. I cant blame you totally tho, HighBrid give this man or woman more time to write these reviews. If your a true fan you will understand me wen i say, “no disrespect intended but if your offended i cant it back handle your business”
p.s. “leave that boy Hov alone why dont you, you dont hav to if you dont want to but dont say i didnt warn ya”

  9. Evorgleb says:

Yo I tried hard to like Blue Magic but its just not hot IMO. The beat tries to be a throwback to the eighties but doesn’t capture that feel. and the hook is horrible. I honestly think it was the first first single ever off a Jay-Z album

  10. 4PL says:

Trust me reido i know all the lyrics your speaking of and more. I can appreciate the fact that you’ve listened to album so thoroughly and can quote lines. I’ve listened to the album about 4 times since I received it monday afternoon and my view is the same. It’s weak!. Again I compare Jay-Z to himself not to other artist the concept behind the songs and the album is a good one. But the rhymes are lazy an uninspired.
