New York Magazine writer Mark Jacobson recently capitalized on all the hype surrounding the Harlem Drug trade stemming from the release of American Gangster and to a lesser extent “Mr. Untouchable” the Dame Dash produced documentary of the life of Nicky Barnes. Jacobson was able to moderate a conversation between Lucas and Barnes, who were Harlem drug adversaries. The transcript ran in the Oct. 25, 2007 issue.

The otherwise pedestrian interview was highlighted by the duo’s thoughts on the upcoming presidential elections, specifically Rudy Giuliani’s chances. Giuliani, prior to his mayoral stint, was a U.S. attorney who actively pursued the two men and was led the push that eventually put many of New York’s organized crime bosses behind bars.

Barnes: Giuliani would make a good president because he’s a principled guy.
Lucas: When Giuliani tells you something, he means it. But I don’t think we’re ready for an Italian president. I don’t think we’re ready for a black president. I don’t think we’re ready for a woman president, but I tell you right now: I think Hillary Clinton will win this thing hands down.
Barnes: Hillary will be the next president.
Lucas: No question about it.

This is interesting. I don’t think Americans as a whole are sophisticated enough to realize that the endorsement of two, unethical murderous gangsters might actually be the realest and unadulterated political endorsement there is. Why? Well before politics was really an issue Giuliani did his most important business with these two guys. If he was able to keep it real with them…maybe he’ll keep it real with you. Just a thought.
