Looks like the DVD quality bootlegs that hit the streets over the last couple of weeks did very little to effect the number of movie goers who went out in droves to see “American Gangster” The flick based on the life of Frank Lucas took home the top spot raking in $46.3 million to top Jerry Seinfeld’s family cartoon “Bee Movie,” which earned $39.1 million to place second.

The two movies turned around the disturbing trend of six-straight weekends of declining revenues at the box office. The top-12 movies brought in $127.2 million, up 12 percent from the same weekend last year, when Borat was number 1 with $26.5 million.

Here are the stats:

1. “American Gangster,” $46.3 million.
2. “Bee Movie,” $39.1 million.
3. “Saw IV,” $11 million.
4. “Dan in Real Life,” $8.1 million.
5. “30 Days of Night,” $4 million.
6. “The Game Plan,” $3.85 million.
7. “Martian Child,” $3.65 million.
8. “Michael Clayton,” $2.9 million.
9. “Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?”, $2.7 million.
10. “Gone Baby Gone,” $2.4 million

yo how bout i’m hearing that it was Jay-z who is responsible for those high quality bootlegs. the story goes that jay-z actually wanted to play frank lucas but was dropped when denzel became interested. so hov went on to do the american gangster album just so he could be part of something he saw as ‘big’. the studio provided him with a dvd quality version of the film to watch while he wrote for his album. still a lil bitter about not getting the part hov let his boys copy the disc and it spread from there. thus we have really high quality bootlegs of american gangster on the streets. its a rumor so take it for what it is worth
