Vandals Hang Noose on Tupac Peace Statue

And the beat goes on. The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation said in a press release yesterday that authorities are investigating two separate incidents of vandalism at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain, GA. Both are being investigated as hate crimes. The first incident occurred this past Saturday when the building was defaced and 2Pac’s memorial statue located in the Center’s Peace Garden was found with a noose around its neck. In addition, the perpetrators left handbills of with rants including references to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina as well as threats against the hip hop community. The attacks are being investigated as hate crimes by authorities who have a arrested a male in connection with the attacks.
“We thank everyone for their prayers and support. Although our hearts are temporarily in pain, our spirits have already forgiven the perpetrators. Hate comes in all colors and genders therefore we will use this act of hate and ignorance to bring our community together and to pray for the healing of those who harbor such feelings.” Afeni Shakur, Tupac’s mother, said through the release. “With God’s guidance, the work of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts and Peace Garden will continue to positively impact and transform our community.”
Earlier this week, I reported about the five such attacks here in New York over the last month but this is a national epidemic. We know they’re inspired by the noose hanging in Jena and fueled by hate. This incident however is gutless and weak. Afeni Shakur, a woman with a militant past now stands as a beacon of peace and has created this center in memorial to here fallen son who was a victim of violence. Where does the message translate folks?
If you bigots out there were real you’d try to make a statement. The Martin Luther King Center is right down the block go try that nonsense there. I’m not condoning or encouraging it by any means but if you’re actions are in attempt to somehow make a statement…the statement should be coherent. This makes no sense. I challenge all you bigots out there to Step Up! If there’s something you have to say in response to Jena or Katrina or whatever, say it but give people a chance to identify you and debate, PEACEFULLY. I’ll even give you a forum here on Highbrid Nation but you best believe my Nation will be there in full force to refute your hate. Keep it clean people. (stream of consciousness)

[…] The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the same paper that broke the Tupac noose story that we reported yesterday is now quoting Marcus Hodge, a DeKalb County police spokesman as saying there was no noose was around Shakur’s neck, but rather an orange nylon string with a wooden cross attached. Hmmmmm. Naturally there would be reports refuting the claim now. […]

“If you bigots out there were real …” That’s just it, These are not real bigots, just pranksters looking for their own share of the spotlight. Congratulations! You all gave them what they wanted.
dsf, and whats the option? to just let it go?
Somehow I knew people would bring that up. Regardless of motivation as a prank or authentic political motivation…This is inappropriate. If there is a “real” political base come to the forefront. People walk the streets in fear because of pranksters as you call them. Hate in whatever form perpetuates more hate.
And people are fooled into thinking America is ready for a Black or Female president. America has always been and will always be ruled by old white males the majority of whom are bigots, these nationwide noose incidents are a reflection of that fact. So lets deal with that reality and make ourselves prepared as a people to deal with Guilliani as our president from 08-2016. You think shit is rough now, we aint seen nothing yet.
Yikes…worst part about it is he’s a Yankee and Red Sox fan how confusing is that. Imagine how confused our country will be.
The country is already confused. Sad thing is everyone is correct on the outlook. We are headed for a slippery slop. Everyone get your guard up. Life is taking a turn for the worst.
Just to touch on everyone’s comments (1) I think debates have a purpose but change and movement does not occur from debate. Change and movement comes from discussion. (2) This incident deserves attention regardless of the “pranksters” motives. (3) This country is ready for a white female with a husband as former president. She has the best shot against the republican party. A black president we are not ready for.
On side note, how about I didn’t know there was a Tupac Shakur Center for the Arts and I am confused by the statue. Is that supposed to be Pac?
Nani, Yes there is a Tupac Center For The Arts. It was founded by Pac’s mom and if I’m not mistaken its located in Atlanta. Kids can go there for various programs in the performing arts.
Nani. Gleb is right its sort of a ode to the MLK Center also in Atlanta but focuses on Art more than history. I think his mother wanted to get a pose of her son that reflected a more dignified Pac. I think we’re so used to see him with a bandanna and shirt off with tats that the sports coat and cross throws us off a bit.
