Today may just very well be the worst day in the history of our beloved franchise. Some may say yesterday however its most certainly is today. As you return to work, elementary school, the nursing home, your fellow co-worker who root for the team across town are gloating, perhaps even hanging up clippings from the New York Daily News or mockingly singing the “Meet the Mets†song. I know how it is and I’m here to say I’m very sorry for our loss. I feel your pain and please realize that this is a sad day that I wish each and every one of you didn’t have to endure.
Those of you who are as avid and passionate about your team understand why this is a very painful day and one very similar to when you lose a loved one. This day, however may be even more painful, because it would be very cruel and unusual of someone to hang up the obituary of a loved one and humiliate you while you mourn their passing.
Some may say, oh its just a game or they’ll be back next year but for those who love their teams the way I do I know that isn’t true. For me the Mets symbolized my childhood, my first and deepest love, my escape from the world when it betrayed me and although in their history the team has lost more than they’ve won we always did it gracefully…that is until this season. We will never forget this team and the collapse of 2007. So I tip my had to the Phillies, who in my opinion played very well, but were fortunate that they won the division by default due to our utter and embarrassing collapse.
So I apologize once again to all my fellow Mets fans who have to endure this day both young and old. On behalf of the team that let us down I encourage you to push on with your day, maintain your pride and faith in the team. The sun will rise again. Pitcher and catchers is just months away.
Regretfully Yours,
Skee Stylus
