Its Jena Six Day - Are you Wearing Black?

This Tree no longer stands but 6 Months ago Nooses hung from it.
Today thousands of black clad protesters descended on the tiny town of Jena, Louisiana to show their support for the “Jena Six†and condemn the unjust punishments handed down to each for their role in this racially charged incident. Around the country, however supporters were asked to wear black to demonstrate their support for what is just in this case. Â
So I ask you…are you wearing black today? For those of you living under a rock or uneducated please go catch up over at CNN. For those of you who are up on your current events the question stands. So often people are in support of an issue only in theory. They don’t want to get their hands dirty in politics but will spend hours debating with friends and sharing details of a case like Jena 6 at dinner parties, at the water cooler on a blog. Wearing black today doesn’t just mean in the physical it means in the spiritual. Tell people about the case. Inform the ignorant. Do you research and write letters and sign the petition because a man who stands for nothing will fall for anything. I’ll be the first to admit I wish I did more…but my actions speak for themselves. Â
But would you wear black today? Or did you forget? Perhaps you should ask yourself if it were the Jena 7 and you were the last member would you want someone to wear black for you? Would you be saddened by those who are VERY educated on your case and share some intense feelings in support to forget to support you on the day you needed them. Â
Truth is it happens all the time. The media hasn’t covered this case in great detail but blogs like Highbrid Nation, Political Groups, and others have screamed as loud as their voices would reach but the only one who can serve as reminder is you…and that can only happen if you care enough in your heart.  Â
So if you’re not wearing black or forgot…it’s cool. You may feel bad, you may run home and change your shirt. But next time a Jena 6 or a Mumia Abu Jamal or a political cause you so call support comes to your town, think if you’ll have the HEART to support when it means the most.Â

[…] So are you still wearing black? Do you even care? If you live in New York or almost anywhere around the globe the news or buzz surrounding the Jena case has considerably died down. Why is that? Inherently the media has moved on to a sexier, fresher stories like Marion Jones’ steroids admission or the most recent school shooting in Cleveland. But was this ever really a MEDIA story? my take is a bit different to say the least: http://averagebro.blogspot.com/2007/09/averagebro-blogs-live-from-jena-la.html
Yo thanks for the love on Highbrid Nation. Please understand Jena Six isn’t an issue of Black/White its an issue of injustice. So often we equate injustice to being a “black thing” because our community is usually a victim. But more accurately its POOR people who are the easiest target and unfortunately we often fit the bill. So perhaps the color black isn’t appropriate but its not the color that’s important it’s the stand.
I did wear black today. On my local news they reported the case of the Jena 6 but they didn’t give enough details about what happened in my opinion.
I just want to thank you for first showing the clip a while back. It got me very riled up and I started telling all my friends about it. We all went to the NAACP to sign the petition as well.
Thanks for reporting this story, otherwise I wouldn’t be hearing about till just now.
I did wear black (and I started to have second thoughts because it was very hot outside). So did it make a difference though?
Why are you cutting up? Sometimes I think that you don’t mind enraging people, maybe you even like it. So I guess I will only upset people further with a similar question. Have we become stuck out on methods that caused action in the past? This incident was not lacking attention. I have not studied the impact of protesting or marching but it seems to be a form of action that seeks to awaken the people or bring attention to an issue. Protesting in this case did not and probably will not do that. We have got to find some new forms of action. People habituate or learn to ignore marches and protests because when the dust settles, people stop talking, demanding change, or acknowledging social inequality.
