The cartoon above has cause a lot of controversy. Seems like people are royally pissed after the cartoon ran in a recent edition of the The Florida Times-Union. The cartoon, which was drawn by Ed Gamble (what a name), depicts a gunner standing over a body with a little girl near him. The girl says “I didn’t see nuttin’”. To which the gunner says, “Now that’s a good little hoe”. Both are wearing “Stop Snitching” shirts.
Of course the NAACP jumped all of this and the editor of the paper has since issued an apology. So is this just another example of the black community being supersensitive and checking white people instead of checking themselves or is the cartoonist really out of line and racist?
I personally don’t have much issue with the cartoon at least in regards to the “snitching” aspect which has gotten to the point of idiocy in the hip hop community. However calling the little girl a “hoe” may have been pushing it. What are your thoughts?

I agree that the “hoe” comment was a bit much, but the cartoon does depict the honor code that exists in the Black community. It’s one thing that the NAACP is in an uproar over the comment, but what about what the cartoon is saying? We’ve GOT to do Better!
I’ve seen those tee shirts around here, the black community should be up in arms agaisnt them not necessary the cartoon (albeit the ho comment was to much).

I was going to comment, but my boyfriend said all I need to so I’ll simply post his reply verbatim.
“It’s highly offensive, but it doesn’t surprise me the least. The only reason there is commotion is because it’s printed. But white folks make comments like that everyday, often in front of black company, but of course we can’t say much then because our jobs would be on the line. And then I’m reading the comments where someone says, “The ‘Ho’ is a bit much, but in general the ad is correct and WE need to do better as a community??” WTF? When white folks were hanging black folks from trees, do you think that other white people in the community stepped up and spoke about the brutality even when they knew it was wrong? Do you think any culture for that matter would? I think that people put 12-much on us and keeping silent in our community, when every other culture does the same thing. The only difference is that we’re in jail far more and we believe that much of that has to do with racial injustice. So the idea of snitching is just not becoming. Particularly in the black community. Outside of that, I don’t think we’re any different in regards to snitching. So yea I’m not feeling that at all. Especially the billboard in the background.”
….”So is this just another example of the black community being supersensitive and checking white people instead of checking themselves or is the cartoonist really out of line and racist?” i say both. every black person doesnt grow up around that kind of thing whereas some do. Some may see it a blatant racist attack. I just see it as ignorance. But you ahve to understand a fact: Many white people are scared sh!tless at the prospect of a blackman as a potential president. scared they will lose their ‘power’. since her has stated he will run 4 pres, theres been all kinds of things to fuel their scary-a$$ed minds AND fuel our mentalities that theyd even do somethign that stupid. WE gotta be smarter than most believe us to be. recognize what has happened in the past but not doom ourselves to repeat our past.
