“Stop Snitchin’” Report on 60 Minutes.

This is the full segment from 60 Minute’s report on Hip Hop’s rule against snitching. Includes the interview with Cam’ron where he says that if a serial killer lived next to him he would not tell the police but would just move himself out the neighborhood. They also go talk about Busta Rhymes not helping the police find the murderer of his bodygaurd. Really interesting report.

Like I said before, the snitching thing has gotten a little out of control. There has to be a place to draw the line or else total anarchy takes place. Tell the cops about some dude who is seling a little weed on the side would be snitching. Making sure that a man who murdered your friend is taken off the street and punished is a very different story.

Anyway, check out the report and tell me what you guys think. I’d like to hear what other people think of the snitchin policy.

**UPDATE: And for those of you that feed into that mess Cam’ron talks then check out the link below because Cam hasn’t always had a issue talking to police. Thanks to C-Hyphen for the link.

As I stated before…
This whole snitchin’ movement is blown waaaaay out of proportion.

I feel like it is now the season to attack rap and rap artists but nonetheless I have two points I would like to make on this 60 minutes video. Sorry but this is going to be long, i am a little heated over this.
The first is that this piece is slanted and bias. I heard one position and one side of this story. The sole reason given for why predominately low income Black communities no longer cooperate with the police is because of the influence of rap. I am sure that there are other reasons that a more articulate, educated person than Camron could speak about. Admittedly I have not studied this issue and cannot speak to its prevalence or the reasons for its occurrence but I know a slanted story when I hear it.
The second point specifically addresses Evorgleb’s request to comment on snitching. If rappers insist on stirring hatred for their own personal gain then the consequences will be just that, consequences. Just look at Imus. Now, I feel like I am blind to some of the damage that others claim that music has inflicted on young people. But after watching this video I definitely don’t want to hear anything Camron has to say. Thinking for yourself is a part of being an adult. You wouldn’t tell the police that there is a serial killer next door because of your creditability being questioned. Are you serious? Grow up! You pay for the police service, so use it.

Good point Nani. Our tax dollars do pay for the police so shouldnt we try to get some use out of them.

One of the things that I find so ironic is the rappers need to uphold thier images in the hood but they don’t even live in the hood. They live in nice houses in the suberbs somewhere. They are telling the people in the hood not to not help police find criminal in their neighborhood but there isnt much crime at all in the neighborhoods the rappers live in.

def, seems to be another tide of “blame hip hop” in the media these days. Oprah is on it.
