Slain rapper Proof’s Quest to Record Album in One Day Cronicled in New Movie

The death of Detroit rapper and former member of Eminem’s famed crew D12, Proof has been well documented.  Some may even know he was an active figure in the storied local hip hop scene prior to fatally being shot and killed at the CCC club one year ago Yesterday (Wednesday.) However, few may know that just two and a half months prior to his death, Proof set out to set hip hop history and write and record an entire album in ONE DAY!  This event was cronicled in the 74 minute documentary Time-A-Tell which is set to premeir at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History

DJ Jewels Baby sparked the crazy idea when he posed the challenge to the slain rapper in Jackson, Michigan in January 2006.  He said “You see how focused he is on his music, how intense he is…This is a chance to see his greatness.”

Jewels described the day as “frantic” stating that they were kept awake by Red Bull but motivated by the spirit of creativity.  Proof’s mother, Sherallene Holton, is looking forward to seeing the film for the first time.  She said “Time-A-Tell” presents Proof “the way I would want people to see my son,” Holton says. “He was so focused about his music, and he was always reaching back and giving to the hip-hop community.”  Jewels is planning to release “Time-A-Tell” as an album, as well, but the project is “still in the works,” he says. “I’m making sure it gets its proper justice.”

Honestly I was never a fan of any of the D12 heads (Eminem aside) but this story has legs.  This is quite an interesting story.  I’m very curious to see how the project turned out.  I would asume it would be garbage but who knows how creative you can be when the clock is ticking on a deadline.  I’m going to try and see where else the film will be screened and keep The Nation posted.

Proof is probably the only other person in D12 that had had skills. His album Searching for Jerry Garcia was seriously slept on. The guy had some serious talent. Its ashame he never got a chance to shine.
