Ex-Grambling coach Robinson dead at 88

Eddie Robinson, who sent more than 200 players to the NFL and won 408 games during a 56-year career, has died. He was 88.

Eddie Robinson

Eddie Robinson, who sent more than 200 players to the NFL and won 408 games during a 56-year career, has died. He was 88.

Interesting accomplishments

• Born Feb. 13, 1919 in Jackson, Louisiana, the son of a cotton sharecropper and a domestic worker.
• Hired at Grambling State in 1941. First team goes 3-5, but 1942 squad goes 9-0.
• Grambling’s Paul “Tank” Younger signs with the Los Angeles Rams in 1949, becoming first player from historically black college to join NFL.
• 1955 team goes 10-0-0.
• Robinson becomes president of American Football Coaches Association in 1976.
• On Oct. 5, 1985, 27-7 win over Prairie View A&M gives Robinson win No. 324, passing Paul “Bear” Bryant as winningest college football coach.
• Wins 400th game in 1995.
• Robinson resigns in 1997 after third straight losing season. He leaves with record of 408-165-15, a .707 winning percentage and 19 Southwest Athletic Conference championships.

Whoa this is huge eddie robinson is one of my personal heroes. Although he was a very accomplished coach I believe he never got the accolades he deserved b/c he coached a black school. He’s never mentioned in the Bear Bryant Joe Paterno Mike Walsh circles. This is truly a sad day. Eddie Robinson is the template for the Lovie Smiths and Tony Dungy’s of the world

Not only was he the football coach but he put sports at HBCU’s on the map. I remember when I was reserching baseball schools I was shocked to see GRAMBLING with a great baseball program. He had a hand in that. I hope his legacy will not be a memory but fuel for continued difference making.
